WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Wildcats this afternoon.
It has been reported that Durham require fresh investment or a complete purchase of the club within the next 21 days or they will have no other option than to cease all operations.
The North East club have been in talks with potential investors in recent weeks and months but interest has fallen away, putting the club’s immediate future in severe doubt. Durham have today informed staff and players of the situation as they desperately seek new investment to stay in business.
Durham were members of the inaugural FAWSL 2 back in 2014 and they have remained at that level of football ever since. The club have one of the best fanbases in the second tier of the women’s game while they have adopted an underdog mentality on the pitch. Durham were second in WSL2 back in 2020/2021, the closest they’ve got to reaching the Barclays Women’s Super League.
In domestic cup football, Durham have regularly risen to the challenge of making life difficult for top tier opponents. They have twice reached the FA Cup quarter-finals while they famously defeated Manchester United on penalties in the League Cup in 2022/2023.
Any potential new investors are encouraged to make contact with the club at the earliest opportunity.
