Durham Women have warned they could cease operations within 21 days unless new investment arrives, amid a funding crisis at the WSL 2 club.
The club said in a statement that they are inviting offers for investment or a complete takeover, having held talks with potential backers for several months that have recently fallen away. Without extra funding, they said they do not have the resources to operate in full compliance in the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 in 2026/27.
Staff and players have been informed that if no buyer or investor emerges within that timeframe, the club would have to shut down all activity.
Formed in 2007 as a single under-10 girls team, Durham have grown without the support of a men’s professional side. The majority shareholders can no longer keep pace with the game’s development and want to hand the club to a party able to build on its legacy.
The Wildcats finished 10th of 12 last season in the division, the second tier of women’s football in England, and ended the campaign with Neil Redfearn in charge for the final six matches.
They have twice reached the Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals and have also made the League Cup last eight on two occasions. Newcastle United and Sunderland now share the WSL 2 stage with Durham.
