VfL Wolfsburg have suffered an early setback, with new goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther expected to be sidelined for several weeks after a knee injury in a pre-season friendly against Olympique Lyon on Friday.
According to BuLi News, medical examinations have confirmed that surgery is not required. Wolfsburg lost 2-0 to Olympique Lyon in the friendly.
He completed his move from Feyenoord around two weeks ago, returning to German football after a nine-year spell abroad. He signed a contract until 2029 and had been brought in to become Wolfsburg’s new first-choice goalkeeper.
Wolfsburg have reshaped their goalkeeping department this summer. Marius Müller has departed for Aberdeen, while former number one Kamil Grabara is also expected to leave, making Wellenreuther central to the rebuild.
The timing is unfortunate for both player and club as preparations continue for the new season.
