The discussions surrounding the future of Max Eberl at FC Bayern continue unabated. Matthias Sammer, a former sports director of the record champions, has now spoken out – and criticized the public debate
Max Eberl continues to be under close scrutiny in Munich. Despite the successful sporting development under Vincent Kompany, decisions on the transfer market and general squad planning are regularly scrutinized. Time and again, the sporting director in particular is named as the main person responsible for individual developments
Matthias Sammer, however, does not understand this view
In an interview with Sky, the former Bayern sporting director made it clear that decisions at a club like FC Bayern are not made by a single person
„The sports director is not tasked with making decisions alone. That always happens in a committee,“ explained Sammer
According to the 57-year-old, the public discussion is often reduced too much to individual people. „That’s why I can’t understand the whole discussion about assigning transfers or decisions to a single person,“ emphasized the 1996 European champion
The day-to-day work within the club is much more important. For Sammer, the focus is on other questions. „Is it working with the coach? Is it working with the staff? Is it working with the players? Are the players getting better? Is the capital being increased or is it being destroyed? These are the tasks of a sports director,“ he explained
It is precisely these factors that Sammer currently rates positively at FC Bayern. The long-standing TV expert sees a clear sporting development under the current management
„FC Bayern Munich has made excellent sporting progress – in the way the team has played and in the way the players have developed,“ praised Sammer

For the former Bayern official, it is therefore all about cohesion within the club
„That’s why we talk more about picking someone, even though we can’t judge the actual processes, whereas we hardly talk about sporting development,“ he criticized
Even though Sammer himself emphasized that he could not judge the internal processes in detail, he formulated a clear recommendation to those responsible at the record champions: „My message to Bayern Munich, although I am not in a position to judge that because I am gone: My message would actually be more ‚we‘,“ explained the former sports director
And continued: „That everyone does their daily work well in their own area.“
Sammer’s statements are likely to be carefully noted in Munich, especially at a time when Bayern are working hard in the transfer market on signings such as Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown, and the 57-year-old reminds us that successes and failures at a top club are rarely the work of a single person
Instead of looking for someone to blame, Sammer calls for more focus on sporting development – and more cohesion within the club.
