Bayern Munich ended what has been a fantastic year on a high note, as Vincent Kompany's men secured a convincing 4-0 away win against Heidenheim.
With the Bundesliga now paused for Christmas, sporting director Max Eberl admitted that he struggled to put into words just how impressed he has been by the squad over the past 12 months.
“I don't even know if I can really describe it properly,” Eberl told DAZN following Bayern's 4-0 win on the road.
“I admire the lads. You come home from a Champions League game on a Thursday, and you already know that another Bundesliga match is waiting on Saturday. Everyone is just waiting for you to stumble or finally lose.”
Eberl believes the foundations for Bayern's strong mentality were laid during the Club World Cup over the summer, despite the tournament ending in defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, while Jamal Musiala would suffer an injury that would see him miss the season's opening months.
“I've said it many times - that Club World Cup was a gift for us,” explained Eberl. “Even though it ended dramatically for us, as a group, as a team, together we, the staff, we had four incredible weeks. Of course, the players would have preferred a holiday, but that tournament meant so much for us.”
According to Eberl, head coach Vincent Kompany never used the tournament as an excuse, instead insisting on clear structures and tactical information from day one.
“We never complained,” Eberl continued. “The coach never used the Club World Cup as an alibi. He wanted the mechanisms, his processes. We stayed focused and concentrated, and with every success, this group became more stable and more confident.”
Bayern opened their Bundesliga campaign with a 6-0 demolition of RB Leipzig, and have lost just once across the campaign's opening months - Eberl felt that the team's reaction to the 3-1 defeat against Arsenal spoke volumes.
“It was one game in the entire first half of the season. But straight away, people asked whether that's enough for Europe. We didn't let it distract us. We said: Okay, move forward, next game.”
“It sounds easy when you say it like this,” he added. “You have to feel it. The players feel the trust from the coach and club, and that sense of togetherness is something we really have right now.”
The sporting director also praised Kompany specifically, mentioning their close working relationship when asked whether they might speak over the Christmas break.
“I'd love to, because it's a lot of fun and we get on very well, but we'd probably end up in trouble with our better halves.”
Der Rekordmeister go into the winter break with a nine-point lead over Borussia Dortmund, with a DFB-Pokal quarter-final clash against RB Leipzig on the cards. At the same time, one more win in the Champions League would all but secure their automatic passage to the round of 16.
