Ecuador travel to North America for the FIFA World Cup this summer carrying the hopes of a nation that has quietly assembled what many are calling the most talented generation of players in its history.
Sebastián Beccacece’s side put together a remarkable qualifying campaign, with only defending champions Argentina finishing above them in the CONMEBOL standings.
This marks the fifth occasion that Ecuador have qualified for the FIFA World Cup, with their finest performance to date coming in 2006, when they advanced to the round of 16 before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to England in Germany.
The qualification campaign was far from straightforward, with Ecuador losing just twice away from home — against Argentina and Brazil — while picking up eight wins and eight draws across the 18-match CONMEBOL programme.
Their defensive resilience stood out in particular, with just five goals conceded throughout the entire qualifying cycle, yielding 29 points despite scoring only 14 goals.
It was an achievement that underlined the disciplined, organised approach Beccacece has instilled in this squad.
La Tri have assembled the most talented squad in their history and arrive at this tournament with genuine expectations.
Chelsea midfielder Moisés Caicedo is regarded as one of the finest central midfielders in the world and serves as Ecuador’s driving force, while PSG’s Willian Pacho became the first Ecuadorian to lift the UEFA Champions League trophy.
Captain Enner Valencia, with 49 international goals across 105 appearances, remains the all-time leading scorer and brings crucial leadership and experience to the group.
Ecuador have been drawn in Group E at the tournament, where Germany, Ivory Coast, and Curaçao await in opposition.
All kick-off times are BST.
