Southampton face the seven-time FA Cup winners at Wembley today in a David v Goliath semi-final. According to Sainstmarching.com, the 5.15 kick-off has created major travel problems, with Saints fans urged to avoid disrupted South rail services. City fans have voted with their feet and Wembley will be a sea of Southampton yellow.
Not everyone minds the late start. ITV Racing presenter Ed Chamberlain, a lifelong Saints fan, is attempting a cross-London dash to make kick-off. He will ride his motorbike from Esher to Brent, hoping to beat a relative to a ticket waiting at the stadium. He comes from a family of Southampton supporters and regularly attends matches.
Before that sprint, Chamberlain fronts the final day of jump racing from Sandown Park this afternoon. The show will see him present the Champion Trainer trophy to Dan Skelton, and he will have one eye on the time.
“I am just pleased that Southampton are being talked about again.” “But not for the racing news.” He told Talk Sport.
The semi-final sits between two hefty league fixtures for Saints. On Tuesday they were below par and held by Roy Hodgson’s well-organised Bristol City, a result that may have effectively ended hopes of automatic promotion. Next Tuesday, Tonda Eckert’s men face Ipswich Town, who are also chasing the second automatic place.
A win could keep Saints’ dream alive, anything less will almost certainly send them into the play-offs.
Chamberlain hopes the dash is not in vain. If he makes it in time, he will join 39,950 Saints fans in a ‘yellow wall’ at Wembley. Southampton will wear a yellow shirt marking 50 years since their FA Cup triumph.
