Former Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes has spoken on the key differences between Pep Guardiola and Brazil head coach, Carlo Ancelotti.
Ederson – who ended his eight-year stay at the Etihad Stadium last summer to join Turkish giants Fenerbahce – holds some of the greatest insider access memoirs of Guardiola in particular, and now Ancelotti with his country.
Having anchored Pep Guardiola’s defence through six Premier League titles and a historic Treble, the 32-year-old now finds himself at the heart of Brazil’s new era under the steady hand of Ancelotti.
As City navigate a high-pressure April schedule – trailing Arsenal by nine points with a game in hand – the debate over Guardiola’s methods has been taken upon by Ederson in his latest set of media activities.
With the Blues recently booking their eighth consecutive FA Cup semi-final with a 4-0 rout of Liverpool, Ederson’s reflections offer a timely look at the psychological demands required to succeed at the highest level of the game.
Speaking exclusively to Flashscore, Ederson was quizzed on the difference between Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti, having now had the opportunity to work with both men for Manchester City and Brazil respectively.
“Oh yes, they have different personalities, don’t they? [Carlo] Ancelotti is more relaxed, [Pep] Guardiola is more intense, but they are still two great coaches, and I was privileged to be able to work with them,” said the Brazilian international.
When the idea of Ancelotti being ‘more of a talker’ was put to the Fenerbahce shot-stopper, he responded, “Ancelotti talks to everyone, he talks to players in private.
“I think that’s a normal thing for all coaches to do with their players. And Ancelotti, with his name, passing on all his experience to us too, that’s very positive.”
The “intensity” mentioned by Ederson is being matched by Guardiola’s latest deputy in Pep Lijnders – who oversaw Manchester City’s FA Cup quarter-final success while the Catalan served a touchline ban.
This ruthless drive has seen City maintain a record-breaking run of 18 consecutive FA Cup home wins – a streak they now hope to carry into their upcoming Premier League meeting with Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Looking further ahead, the contrast in styles could perhaps raise questions about how City will manage the emotional fatigue of their latest Premier League title race, which looks set to go down to the final day.
While Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil enjoys a more conversational atmosphere, the Guardiola machine at the Etihad Stadium shows no signs of relaxing as they pursue another domestic cup double, and a looming showdown against Mikel Arteta’s Gunners on April 26.
