Éderson’s €45m United Move Is Functionally Done, Midfielder Confirms

Éderson (26) has confirmed his own transfer to Manchester United is almost complete, stating publicly that only a signature stands between him and a move to Old Trafford – the clearest indication yet that a deal worth up to €45m (£39m) is functionally done.

The Atalanta midfielder made the declaration himself, removing whatever residual uncertainty surrounded negotiations that have been advancing rapidly over the past fortnight. When the player is confirming a move in his own words, the formalities are rarely far behind.

What Éderson’s confirmation means

Fabrizio Romano, Nicolò Schira, BBC Sport, and Sky Sports had already been treating this as a full agreement between the clubs, and Sky Sports reported United and Atalanta were in the final stages of formalising the deal – but a direct quote from Éderson himself renders the transfer-tracking semantics largely academic. The medical is either scheduled or already completed; the paperwork is the only remaining obstacle.

The agreed fee structure stands at €40.5m plus up to €4.5m in performance-related bonuses, with Éderson set to sign a contract running to 2030 with the option of an additional year. Wages are reported at around €5m per annum – a significant but defensible outlay for a player of his age and track record.

Deal background and what United get

Éderson arrived at Atalanta from Fortaleza via Salernitana in January 2022 and became central to Gian Piero Gasperini’s high-intensity midfield structure, culminating in Atalanta lifting the Europa League in 2023–24 and qualifying for the Champions League. That campaign – and the profile it gave him across Europe – is precisely what drove his valuation into the bracket United are now paying.

United are signing Éderson explicitly to replace Casemiro, whose decline has been one of the more damaging constants of the past two seasons. Where Casemiro has become a liability in transition and press-resistance, Éderson offers exactly the ball-winning intensity and tactical discipline that Michael Carrick’s system demands. The club view this as their first major signing of the summer – and the first real statement of intent under Carrick’s permanent tenure.

Alas, United have waited too long to address the midfield engine room, with Casemiro’s limitations exposed at the highest level for the better part of eighteen months. At least the solution identified is a credible one. The club-to-club agreement was locked in earlier this month, with personal terms following swiftly once Atalanta confirmed their willingness to sell at the agreed framework.

What happens next

The transfer is expected to be announced officially after Brazil’s World Cup campaign concludes, allowing Éderson to travel to Manchester and complete the remaining administrative steps. United’s pre-season programme begins in early July, and the expectation internally is that he features as a first-choice starter from the outset of Carrick’s rebuild.

It remains to be seen whether United can supplement the Éderson signing with further midfield or attacking reinforcements before the window closes, or whether this deal represents the full extent of their central options for the summer.
