Edin Terzic is already hard at work at Lezama during the squad’s holidays, tackling a swollen group and staffing calls.
According to as.com, Athletic’s choice to lead the first team for the next two seasons is moving to trim a group of about 37, decide on nine loanees, and finalise his backroom. Fitness coach David Casamichana is included, with another hire possible.
In goal, Athletic aim to cash in on Julen Agirrezabala via a transfer, with Deportivo, Villarreal and clubs abroad interested. Padilla will be Unai Simón’s number two. Mikel Santos could go out on loan, with Albacete waiting.
Recent renewals for Yuri Berchiche and Rego ease planning. Loanees Canales and Gerenabarrena return, possibly joined by Rincón unless the club opts to sell. Iker Varela has an agreement with UD Ibiza on a transfer that includes a buy option.
Up front, several clubs have lodged proposals for Izeta, though he intends to try to convince Terzic in pre-season, which starts on the eighth with the first session. The midfield is congested, so decisions will be taken with the sporting department.
Barring an unexpected twist, there may be no external signings, given a tight market that lacks standout options without a major outlay, something not feasible without European income. Five friendlies are confirmed, all within 50 kilometres of Bilbao, where Terzic, who has been studying videos since January, will assess his squad and select academy players for pre-season based on their performance and projection after last season in Primera Federación.
