At 39, Boca Juniors forward Edinson Cavani has issued an upbeat message as uncertainty surrounds his return, reaffirming his determination to play again.

The player said in a post that recent setbacks have taught him to keep looking forward and to chase his goals, adding that he feels happy and eager to compete with the group.

Since undergoing a second lumbar block, he has yet to complete a football session, and a return before the World Cup cannot be guaranteed.

He is doing ball work with team-mates who are not currently involved, and with Carlos Palacios, who is also working back to fitness.

The immediate plan is to give him minutes in training, gauge how his body reacts to the load, then rebuild sharpness alongside the squad.

There is a clear medical threshold, if his back pain reappears under strain, a third block would not be advised. The last procedure is considered definitive, and failure to settle the issue would make a full return extremely difficult.

Cavani has played only two matches this year. Pre-season in June and July will be pivotal, and his contract runs until the end of the year, so he will channel his energy into that period.

Once fit, he will have to fight for a starting place, no longer an automatic pick, yet his effort and competitive drive remain undimmed.
