Edinson Cavani will undergo back surgery in Buenos Aires in the coming days after a herniated disc, and his recovery would take at least two months.

According to SuperDepor.com, his first six months at Boca Juniors brought only two matches and persistent back pain. After two blocks and several attempts to return, and with the World Cup break, the Uruguay forward chose to undergo the operation.

The squad are due back on 18 July with a new head coach, and Cavani will miss pre-season.

The club announced yesterday it will not renew Claudio Úbeda's contract, so president Juan Román Riquelme and sporting director Marcelo Delgado are now seeking a replacement.

Néstor Lorenzo, coach of Colombia, has featured among the options. Antonio Mohamed, currently at Toluca, said recently his focus is on the Mexican side's next fixtures, while Rodolfo Arruabarrena, who lives in Spain, has also been mentioned.

Ricardo Zielinski, newly crowned with Belgrano de Córdoba in the Apertura, has likewise emerged, though there has been no contact so far.

Whoever takes charge, Cavani will aim for a definitive recovery from his back problems to resume playing for Boca.
