Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has always insisted that the team requires three midfielders to compensate for the departure of Casemiro and the planned sale of Manuel Ugarte.
The Red Devils have so far signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, and while both can operate as defensive midfielders, they are seen more as versatile options capable of oscillating between the No.6 and No.8 positions depending on the situation.
INEOS are delighted with both deals but the club are yet to sign that elusive defensive midfielder so highly coveted by the new boss.
Having missed out on Aurelien Tchouameni, the 20-time English league champions have now set their sights on his club teammate and compatriot, Eduardo Camavinga.
However, the Frenchman is keen to remain at the Bernabeu, but The Daily Mail have now revealed that Los Blancos are open to the idea of his sale.
Interestingly, Manchester City are named as United’s rivals in the race, but the noisy neighbours have shifted their attention to Ayyoub Bouaddi, potentially handing United the chance to seal the deal.
However, a lot will depend on how much the former Stade Rennais ace costs and whether the La Liga giants are open to a structured deal.
“Eduardo Camavinga could be allowed to leave Real Madrid this summer. The 23-year-old France international is keen to remain at the Bernabeu but may be made available for transfer to offset spending elsewhere.
“Manchester City and Manchester United have both considered Camavinga, but cost will obviously be key if the player is put up for transfer.
“City are discussing Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi as it stands, whose value has escalated but is only 18 and, potentially, would be a greater long-term investment.
“United, budget-wise, are also looking for more conservatively priced options or deals that can be structured.”
With Ugarte currently injured, the Old Trafford side are unlikely to spend big on their third arrival in this department, having already spent around £85 million to land Santos and Tielemans.
Unless, of course, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui are sold. That could open up the possibility of a marquee arrival later in the window.
Incidentally, United are also on the lookout for a backup for Luke Shaw and Eduardo Camavinga has significant experience of playing in that position for Real when required. The idea of killing two birds with one stone could possibly change INEOS’ mind regarding spending big on the France international.
