A League One club look set to be sanctioned

After completing a somewhat unlikely rise up the leagues into the EFL in 2009, Burton Albion have impressively managed to become a stable League One club - and even once reached the dizzy heights of the Championship.

Initially forming in 1950 as part of the Birmingham & District League, the Brewers appointing former England and Premier League striker Nigel Clough as player-manager in 1998 was the catalyst for their spectacular ascent up the pyramid.

Despite only being 32 years of age at the time, Clough arrived at Eton Park and stayed there for 11 years - at which point Albion were top of the National League and were heading for League Two, and after caretaker boss Roy McFarland notched a promotion on his CV, Paul Peschisolido took the Staffordshire outfit into their new era, but it was Gary Rowett and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who led them to their back-to-back promotions in 2015 and 2016 to reach the Championship.

Albion lasted just two years in the second tier, but since 2018-19 they have remained in League One, and under a steady operator in Gary Bowyer they once again finished clear of the relegation zone in 17th position - but is trouble on the way?

Burton Albion poised for FA punishment after misconduct charges

A new dawn emerged at the Pirelli Stadium in the summer of 2024, when long-serving chairman Ben Robinson decided to sell the club to the Nordic Football Group, with a whole host of individuals as investors into the group, which include Swedish billionaire Karl Johan Persson - the chairman of fashion company H&M.

Their ambitions were clear from the get-go with their overhaul of the first-team squad at Burton, and they broke a British transfer record by signing 23 players in one single window. 19 of those were permanent deals.

Some were incredibly rogue, such as French left-back Ivan Inzoudine from FC Chambly Oise, who did not end up playing a game for the club, but some of the incomings like Charlie Webster, Rumarn Burrell and Elliott Watt have either been a success or have gone on to bigger and better things.

Unfortunately though, that appears to have caught up with them. The club have been investigated over their dealings that summer for a while now, and it was confirmed in June that the FA had charged Albion 28 times for misconduct, which all related to the dealings of agent Conor Hayden.

Some one month later, it has now been confirmed by Albion that they have accepted all 28 misconduct charges sent by the FA, and that another update will follow when there is news to share - presumably with some sort of punishment.

Burton Albion's League One status could be in jeopardy after FA charges

Burton have punched above their weight for a long time now, with their Championship promotion in 2016 perhaps coming as a surprise to many, but the big investment from the Nordic Football Group hasn't exactly paid off.

Yes, Albion have survived again in the last two years, but on crowds of an average of 4,130, their potential is perhaps a bit limited, and the ownership's losses of £8.3 million for their first season at the helm - a £7 million increase from before their takeover - could be seen as worrying.

Their mass dealings of two summers ago look to have bitten them too, even if they did make a bit of cash from the aforementioned Burrell's sale to QPR, and the likes of Udoka Godwin-Malife and Jake Beesley have been sold to League One rivals already this summer, which isn't a positive sign.

Due to the fact that there were 28 individual misconduct charges, Burton may be penalised heavily for this, either financially or with a registration embargo - that is speculation for now, but any form of punishment could potentially put Bowyer's side at risk, and it could obviously lead to the likes of Charlie Webster and Tyrese Shade, who were two more standout players from 2025-26, to be of interest to League One rivals, which is the last thing that the 55-year-old needs to deal with ahead of the new campaign.
