The EFL confirmed that the Championship play-offs will expand to six places next season, introducing an eliminator round before two-legged semi-finals.

There will be seven fixtures, with winners of two eliminators facing the teams in third and fourth over two legs, before a final. The exact final format will be agreed later in 2026.

Despite consecutive Premier League wins over Aston Villa and Liverpool lifting them to 16 points, Wolves are 12 adrift of safety and relegation still looks highly likely.

More play-off places could appeal at Molineux, offering greater scope for an immediate return if they go down, though competition within the play-offs will increase.

Asked about the changes before Friday night’s FA Cup tie with Liverpool, Rob Edwards said: “I’m not surprised. I think everyone in the Championship will want a better opportunity to be in the Premier League.”

“I understand the format. I know the talks have been going on for a lot of this season, so I’m not surprised that that’s gone through. The play-offs are obviously an exciting way of getting promoted.”

“If it gives teams more opportunity to do that then yeah, I’m not surprised that’s gone through.”

Edwards previously secured promotion via the play-offs with Luton Town in 2022/23, while Wolves did so in 2003 by beating Millwall at the Millennium Stadium.
