The World Cup fixture between Egypt and Iran in Seattle on 26 June has been designated a Pride match in support of LGBTQ+ rights, a slot chosen months ago. Both teams have criticised the label and asked FIFA to reverse it.
An Iran team spokesperson said: "Iran and Egypt are two Muslim countries sharing deep cultural and religious affinities, the views expressed by the two federations reflect the values and beliefs shared by the populations of these two countries. Our position is that no ceremony or promotional activity related to this movement should take place inside the stadium or in the match environment. This position has been communicated to FIFA through the appropriate channels", speaking to the New York Times.
Organisers have said the plans remain unchanged despite objections. Committee representative Jaelynn Scott said Seattle would carry on regardless, describing daily life as openly queer and trans and calling the city a sanctuary where many come to live and thrive.
Pride celebrations take place in the city this weekend, and the local committee created the initiative in that context. When the December draw fixed this fixture for Seattle on that date, the pairing helped set the stage for the current row in the city, which has a long-standing inclusive reputation and has drawn more LGBTQ+ residents amid anti-trans policies in the US.
In the meantime, the teams have accepted that rainbow flags can be displayed in the stands during the match.
