A night of the 2026 World Cup delivered historic firsts, from Cape Verde’s inaugural goals to Egypt’s maiden win, as L'Équipe notes.

In Miami, Cape Verde held Uruguay 2-2 to claim the second World Cup point in their history. The Blue Sharks also scored their first two goals at the finals.

Fernando Muslera looked uncertain on Kévin Pina’s free-kick, then gifted Cape Verde the equaliser. He rushed out needlessly after a mis-hit back-pass, Helio Varela rounded the 40-year-old and finished into an empty net. It was his fourth World Cup error leading to a goal, and Uruguay, on two points from two, now need an upset against Spain.

A few hours later, Egypt beat New Zealand 3-1 for their first ever World Cup victory. Mohamed Salah scored and provided an assist.

At 34, Salah made his 29th appearance at a major international tournament, surpassing Ahmed Hassan and Essam El-Hadary. He is now Egypt’s most-capped player at a major finals.

Before facing Austria at 19:00, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni criticised the new cooling breaks. He said they break the rhythm and favour teams under pressure, citing Brazil’s equaliser against Morocco on matchday one. His stance echoed Marcelo Bielsa’s recent complaints.

Monday’s fixtures: Argentina v Austria 19:00, France v Iraq 23:00, Norway v Senegal 02:00, Jordan v Algeria 05:00.
