Eight big Sunderland selection and transfer questions for Régis Le Bris before Ipswich opener | OneFootball

Sunderland’s pre-season has begun with a 5-1 win at York, yet Régis Le Bris still has major calls before Ipswich Town, Sunderland Echo notes.

Chris Rigg’s best role remains under review. The 19-year-old scored at York, looks stronger, and could suit a number-eight role, though defensive trust in the Premier League is the question.

At centre-back, Dan Ballard is expected back on the tour after ankle surgery. Omar Alderete impressed, and Nordi Mukiele can play there. Ballard with Alderete looks natural, though signings could change that.

Trai Hume is a dependable right-back, and starting him frees Mukiele to play centrally. Thomas Meunier offers cover after the near-£20million Geertruida option was not taken.

Aji Alese’s return after injury was encouraging. He can cover centre-back and left-back if he stays fit. Jenson Seelt has tools but needs clarity on minutes, while Leo Hjelde offers left-sided cover and had knee discomfort at York.

Romaine Mundle’s progress was stalled by two hamstring injuries. He trained before York yet was not risked. With Nilson Angulo and Chemsdine Talbi competing, he must prove durability.

Anthony Patterson still seems likeliest to depart, though no bid has met the valuation. He continues training, with Robin Roefs first choice and Melker Ellborg deputy, while Alan Browne, Arthur Masuaku and Simon Adingra await decisions.

Timur Tutierov scored at York and could take another EFL loan after Exeter City or stay for cup minutes. Trey Ogunsuyi is behind Wilson Isidor and Brian Brobbey up front, so a loan is under consideration.
