Leicester City enter League One needing a new-look squad for morale and finances. Relegation opens the door for academy players to step up.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, Ruud van Nistelrooy urged City to build on homegrown talent, and with seven substitutes not nine, up to half of an 18-man group could be academy-made.

Sammy Braybrooke, 22 and in the League Two team of the year, looks likely to return and play a role. Louis Page, 17, has shown neat technique and should handle League One, whether holding, box to box or No 10. Will Alves, 20, managed only 10 Huddersfield outings but his dribbling could yet reignite.

Bade Aluko has sampled senior football, a red card at Southampton his big lesson, and could feature more at full-back or as a quick, ball-playing centre-back. Jayden Joseph, on loan at Tranmere, hit a van Basten-style strike against Cheltenham and later created another.

Centre-back Kevon Gray is yet to debut, though Under-21 progress and winter benches suggest he could be around the first team, with height and bravery useful at set-pieces. Jake Evans returns from Northampton after his first senior goal and could claim the right flank. At 15, Darren Motsi could get a look next term, is Premier League 2’s youngest scorer and has netted for England Under-16s.
