Eintracht Frankfurt overpowered Galatasaray 5-1 in the Champions League on Thursday as they climb to the top of the standings.

Goals from Can Uzun, Jonathan Burkardt and Ansgar Knauff were accompanied by own goals from the Galatasaray centre-back pairing. Davinson Sánchez and Wilfried Singo were both unfortunate with their defensive errors, but this takes nothing away from Frankfurt’s dominance.

Dino Toppmöller’s side surpassed PSG at the top of the standings after they beat Atalanta 4-0 on Wednesday evening. The Italian side will be accompanied by Galatasaray at the bottom of the league.

Galatasaray will have to face Liverpool in their next Champions League outing after a dismal opening fixture to their European campaign. Whereas, Frankfurt will travel to Spain to play Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

As it happened

It was Galatasaray who opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Yunus Akgün received a threaded pass from Leroy Sané and fired past Frankfurt goalkeeper Michael Zetterer to make it 1-0. Nnamdi Collins’ failed intervention was a vital defensive error, allowing the 25-year-old forward an opportunity to shoot on the left of the 18-yard box.

The visitors could have doubled their lead, but Baris Alper Yilmaz squandered a gaping opportunity from close range in the 24th minute. It was destined to be a perfectly orchestrated set-piece from close range, courtesy of a Farès Chaïbi handball. İlkay Gündoğan slotted the ball to the Turkish forward, but his effort blasted over the crossbar.

Frankfurt soon got their equaliser in the 37th minute, after Ritsu Doan’s shot deflected off Davinson Sánchez for an own goal.

From 1-0 down, the German hosts fired themselves into a 3-1 lead before half-time. A Can Uzun goal and another Galatasaray own goal put Eintracht Frankfurt ahead in stoppage time.

Uzun received the ball in the centre of the penalty area from Jonathan Burkardt and buried his effort into the back of the net.

Frankfurt were devastating from set-pieces, exhibited from Chaïbi’s sumptuous delivery into the 18-yard box. Wilfried Singo made unfortunate contact with the ball as it flew past Uğurcan Çakir.

The atmosphere was electric at the Stadium Deutsche Bank Park, with the German side determined to maintain their advantage in the second half.

The atmosphere certainly paid off as Burkardt’s header, from a Nathaniel Brown cross, deflected off Sanchez again to put the contest to bed in the 66th minute.

It was another defensive error from the visitors, after Elye Wahi pressured fellow substitute Gabriel Sara. This presented the ball to Ansgar Knauff, who made it five with 15 minutes still left to play.
