Stade Rennais have emerged as frontrunners to sign Sunderland striker Eliezer Mayenda this summer. Foot Mercato reports that the Ligue 1 side are in advanced talks over a permanent deal.
Interest has built since Sunderland signalled a willingness to sanction his exit, with the forward keen on a new opportunity.
If concluded, the move would deliver a major profit on the initial one million paid to Sochaux three years ago, though a significant sell-on is understood to be in place. The package is expected to be worth around 22 million to Sunderland including add-ons, strengthening their SCR position this summer and beyond.
Sunderland remain convinced by Mayenda’s potential but accept his wish for regular football after spending much of last season as third-choice striker. His chances of starting regularly on Wearside are not thought likely to change soon, with Brian Brobbey enhancing his reputation for the Netherlands at the World Cup.
A deal is not yet finalised and with other clubs interested, the picture could still shift. Even so, a permanent departure this summer now looks the likeliest outcome.
Should he join Stade Rennais, Mayenda would be set for a Stadium of Light farewell when the sides meet in a pre-season friendly on August 15th. Having both qualified for the Europa League group stages, they could also face each other in competitive football next season.
