Work on Elland Road’s long-awaited expansion is under way. The West Stand is projected to finish around late 2028, with the North Stand awaiting full permission and potentially taking two further years.
According to Leeds Live, Leeds City Council approved the scheme in January after transport and traffic revisions, so the original timetable stands. Schedules can stretch, but preparatory work has begun.
The 49ers owners have driven long-discussed plans, with a season ticket waiting list beyond 26,000 that will shrink but not disappear. Capacity will rise from 37,645 to 53,000, moving Elland Road into England’s top 10.
The project does not depend on Premier League status and will proceed in any division. Staying up would ease delivery, with investors more inclined to engage and interest rates decreasing the longer Leeds remain up.
United are on course to clear the first survival hurdle as a newly promoted side, aiding timelines.
Early groundwork is visible, with West Stand scaffolding and diggers on site. The security hub will move to the North East corner, and the Don Revie FA Cup mural will be removed then repainted elsewhere.
Sections will be demolished and rebuilt, with bulk activity in summers and international breaks from this summer. The blueprint aims to preserve and enhance Elland Road’s atmosphere.
As of October, new architects were appointed without altering the design. Daniel Farke has advised on dressing room layout and atmosphere, and whether he is there for completion is unclear. Passers-by should notice more activity this summer.
