Nottingham Forest have rejected an opening Manchester City bid for Elliot Anderson, with the club holding firm over a potential nine-figure price as the 23-year-old prepares for England’s World Cup campaign.

City are said to be keen to move before the tournament, though Forest are in a strong position with Anderson under contract until 2029. Sky Sports reports that England head coach Thomas Tuchel has told his squad there should be no distractions.

City are likely to return with another offer, while Sandro Tonali at Newcastle United is understood to be an alternative target.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis wants any exit to deliver the best possible terms, and Forest are thought to value the former Newcastle midfielder at north of £100 million. A strong World Cup could further enhance that valuation.

Manchester United have reportedly stepped away, unwilling to meet Forest’s price and believing Anderson would favour City.

Anderson played every Premier League game this season, scoring four and supplying four assists as Forest stayed up and reached the Europa League semi-finals.

Back in March he said his priority this summer would be England duties, and it is claimed he will not do anything to upset Marinakis after the owner’s support following his mother’s death earlier this year.

Head coach Vitor Pereira said after the final game that he could not predict the market but wants to keep the core together, adding only two or three signings to balance the squad and aiming to get them in early.
