Manchester United remain hot on the heels of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. The Red Devils are looking to bolster their options in the middle of the park in 2026, after focusing all their resources on the attack this summer.

Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have formed an impressive two-man pivot this season, but there are gaps in midfield that need to be addressed soon. Both players are on the wrong side of 30, and the Brazilian is also out of contract in around six months.

There is a lack of cover for the position in Ruben Amorim’s squad. Manuel Ugarte has failed to live up to expectations, while Kobbie Mainoo’s future remains uncertain for now.

INEOS are eyeing several candidates to strengthen the position, either in January or next summer. Recent reports suggest that Anderson is among the names on their wish list.

Premier League’s rising star

Anderson has gone from strength to strength since joining Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United for a reported £15m in 2024.

The Englishman has been one of the Premier League’s best midfielders this season and is also a key figure for the national team.

Elliot Anderson Stats: 2025/26 Season

Anderson has registered 651 successful short passes in the Premier League this season, the third-highest in the league. The only other midfielder in the top ten is Martin Zubimendi (600).

The 23 year old has also completed 31 successful long passes in the league, the fifth-highest among Premier League midfielders, with Bruno Fernandes (54) topping the list. The Englishman has also won 82 duels, the joint-most in the league alongside Lucas Paqueta.

It is no wonder that United are already considering a move for Anderson in January, though their pursuit could end in disappointment.

The next £100m man?

According to The Telegraph, Forest will not entertain Anderson’s departure at the turn of the year. The West Bridgford side are prepared to demand a premium fee for their prized asset, and a move could cost more than £100 million after installments.

“Elliot Anderson is on course to become the next £100m-plus English player with Nottingham Forest ready to adopt a tough stance on his future.”

“Anderson will be in serious demand in the summer and could follow Jack Grealish and Declan Rice as the latest home-grown Premier League player to cost nine figures.

“Manchester United and former club Newcastle United are two clubs with strong interest. Forest will not consider a sale of the England midfielder under any circumstances in the January transfer window.”

The report adds that there is no release clause in the player’s contract, and Newcastle have no buy-back or sell-on options either.

Final Thoughts

The updates are likely to be met with disappointment at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, United also remain linked with Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, who is also expected to cost above £100 million as well.

While the focus is likely to be on the midfield in 2026, it remains unclear whether the Red Devils have the funds to complete two big-money deals next year.

United were previously interested in former West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice, but failed to complete a move. Arsenal secured his signature in the summer of 2023, and the 26 year old has transformed Mikel Arteta’s side.

Anderson could have a similar impact at the Theatre of Dreams, provided INEOS are willing to splash the cash in 2026.
