Manchester United remain in the hunt for Elliot Anderson, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said to be willing to meet the player's wage demands, The Guardian reports.
Nottingham Forest's £100m valuation and Manchester City's firm interest had prompted United to look at alternative midfield targets.
Club executives are said to be confident they can beat City to an agreement. The 23-year-old is thought to earn £100,000 a week at the City Ground, with a 50 per cent rise anticipated.
City have already seen one bid rejected and are planning a second offer in excess of £80m, which still falls short of Forest's price.
A strong World Cup for Anderson with England could push Forest to demand more. He is expected to start alongside Declan Rice for the Three Lions against Croatia in the group opener.
