Argentina edged past Switzerland 3–1 after extra time in a dramatic World Cup quarter-final that turned on Breel Embolo's controversial dismissal. The defending champions took an early lead through Alexis Mac Allister's header before Dan Ndoye equalised, but Embolo's red card for simulation in the 70th minute left the Swiss to battle with ten men for the remainder of the contest.

Julián Álvarez's stunning strike in the 112th minute finally broke Swiss resistance, and Lautaro Martínez added a third in stoppage time to send Argentina into the semi-finals. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Argentina v Switzerland.

Winners

Julián Álvarez (Argentina)

Álvarez delivered the decisive moment of the quarter-final with a spectacular strike from outside the box in the 112th minute. Receiving José Manuel López's layoff, he curled a right-footed shot into the top corner that Gregor Kobel could not reach, breaking the deadlock when Argentina's pressure needed converting into tangible reward.

Throughout the 120-plus minutes, Álvarez showed excellent movement and combined effectively with Lionel Messi in tight spaces. He had earlier shots blocked by Denis Zakaria and fired an effort over during extra time, constantly probing for openings against a depleted Swiss defence.

His match-winning goal showcased the individual quality required to unlock organised ten-man defences. With Argentina struggling to capitalise on their numerical advantage through patient buildup, Álvarez's technique provided the breakthrough that structure alone could not achieve, securing a semi-final place against England.

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Messi served as Argentina's creative heartbeat across the full 120-plus minutes, delivering the corner from which Mac Allister headed the opening goal. His left-footed set-piece picked out the Liverpool midfielder perfectly between defenders, giving the champions the early advantage that shaped the tactical landscape.

Constantly seeking the ball in dangerous areas, Messi completed multiple dribbles past Swiss defenders and created space for teammates with his movement. He forced saves from Kobel with curling efforts, beat Xhaka with a brilliant dribble before firing narrowly wide, and had another shot blocked by Xhaka's crucial intervention in the 120th minute.

With 99 actions on the ball, four shots, and three successful dribbles, Messi was the undisputed reference point for Argentina's attack. His persistence stretched Switzerland's ten-man structure throughout extra time, creating the conditions for Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez to eventually convert.

Loser

Breel Embolo (Switzerland)

Embolo's dismissal in the 70th minute transformed the contest at the worst possible time for Switzerland. Already cautioned for a late challenge in the 44th minute, he received a second yellow card after VAR revealed he had simulated a foul from Leandro Paredes, leaving his teammates to defend with ten men for over fifty minutes.

The timing proved particularly damaging as Switzerland had just equalised through Ndoye and were carrying momentum into what could have been a defining spell. Instead, Embolo walked off in tears having undermined his side's best chance of reaching a first World Cup semi-final with an unnecessary piece of deception.

Had Embolo stayed on the pitch, Switzerland might have sustained their pressure and threatened Argentina's vulnerable moments. Instead, Murat Yakin was forced into defensive reorganisation, and the Swiss ultimately could not withstand Argentina's sustained extra-time assault, conceding twice in the final nine minutes.
