Emmanuel Emegha loved in the dressing room, but on-pitch provocation is hurting Strasbourg | OneFootball

Emmanuel Emegha is a valued figure at Strasbourg, yet the captain’s on-pitch provocation is proving costly, most recently in the 0-1 defeat at Rayo Vallecano in Thursday’s Conference League semi-final first leg.

According to L'Équipe, the 23-year-old lingered after full time to taunt fans beneath the Bukaneros end, sparking a final flashpoint as team-mates headed down the tunnel.

Earlier, after a superb recovery run, he had already goaded a side stand and was booked for dissent at 45+6. Ex-Strasbourg player Dimitri Liénard believes the captain was drawn into Rayo’s game, dragging team-mates with him, with even Julio Enciso and Diego Moreira shoving opponents.

Emegha, a Netherlands international with two caps, holds a central role in a youthful squad. He led the line before a hamstring injury opened the door for Joaquin Panichelli, now also out with a knee problem, and is a dressing-room livewire with Moreira. Ben Chilwell is another leader, six years his senior, albeit in a different role.

That exuberance lands better inside the club than outside. Strasbourg have Ligue 1’s youngest group at 22 years and nine months, while Rayo, at 28 years and eight months and among La Liga’s most seasoned, leaned on Vallecas’ fervour to tilt the tie towards a physical battle.

Liénard describes Emegha as irritating and endearing, and says after four months out, 113 days and 20 matches, he should prioritise his football. If he scores two next Thursday and takes Racing into the final, critics could be silenced.
