Emmanuel Macron has paid tribute to Didier Deschamps ahead of his final match as France head coach, the 2026 World Cup third-place play-off against England at 23:00 on Saturday.

According to L'Équipe, the French president posted on X before kick-off, saying a chapter in the nation’s football history closes tonight and thanking Deschamps for legendary victories, powerful emotions and years of leading Les Bleus. He also described the past 14 years as the Deschamps generation.

Macron attached the France v England trailer aired by M6 to his message.

Deschamps’ farewell comes after Spain beat France 2-0 in Tuesday’s semi-final, denying his side a place in the final.

The 57-year-old still has the chance to end on a positive note against England.
