Emmanuel Macron says Didier Deschamps embodies a French spirit before World Cup send-off | OneFootball

Emmanuel Macron has paid tribute to France head coach Didier Deschamps, days before the squad depart for the United States for the 2026 World Cup.

“Like every French person, I will miss D.D.,” Macron said, praising Deschamps’ “quiet strength and calm in the face of adversity”, speaking to Ouest-France on Monday.

In charge since 2012, Deschamps was also described as “the coach of our happy days”, with Macron recalling the 2018 World Cup final win in Moscow.

“Didier Deschamps really embodies a French spirit that never gives up,” the president added.

Macron and his wife, Brigitte, will visit the squad on Tuesday before their departure on Wednesday 10 June to the United States, with the tournament starting the following day.

They are also due to meet the women’s team at Clairefontaine, where preparations continue for two 2027 World Cup qualifiers, with the finals to be staged in Brazil.
