ENDING AT SAN SIRO

Gambar artikel:ENDING AT SAN SIRO

The last times that AC Milan entered the final match of the league season with their fate in their own hands to secure Champions League qualification were in 2021 and 2013. In Bergamo, five years ago, it ended 2-0 to the Rossoneri, with a Kessie brace from the penalty spot helping AC Milan to win, secure second place and return to the Champions League after seven years away. Siena 1-2 AC Milan in 2013, meanwhile, was a dramatic match played under heavy rain. Trailing by one goal, AC Milan turned the result around in the closing minutes thanks to goals from Mario Balotelli (penalty) and Mexès, snatching a place in the Champions League qualifiers ahead of Fiorentina. In recent Serie A seasons, AC Milan have achieved generally positive results on the final day of the league campaign. AC Milan’s most recent appearances on the 38th and final matchday of the league season have been very different from one another and marked by contrasting atmospheres. One year ago, there was tension and criticism surrounding AC Milan 2-0 Monza, with the Rossoneri no longer competing for any specific objective. In May 2024, during AC Milan 3-3 Salernitana, San Siro hosted a night of farewells for Stefano Pioli, Olivier Giroud and Simon Kjær. AC Milan’s goals came from Leão, Giroud and Calabria. One year earlier, meanwhile, AC Milan v Hellas Verona ended 3-1, a victory sealed by a Giroud penalty and a late brace from Rafael Leão. The match also marked Zlatan Ibrahimović’s retirement from football, while forcing the Veneto side into the relegation play-off, that they later won against Spezia. Now, all focus and heart are on AC Milan v Cagliari.
