Thomas Tuchel faces tough decision over first-choice right-back
Tino Livramento has described his England right-back rival Reece James as an “unbelievable” player.
James is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and is therefore not involved in the England camp this month.
The Chelsea captain is set to be Tuchel’s first-choice right-back at the World Cup this summer, with Newcastle’s Livramento among those also hoping to make the squad and rival James for that role.
Livramento was on Chelsea’s books from 2009 to 2021, when he left in search of first-team opportunities at Southampton.
He played the full 90 minutes at right-back on Friday night in England’s 1-1 friendly draw with Uruguay.
Asked whether he is single-minded in his approach to England and setting his sights on dislodging James, Livramento replied: “Not necessarily.”
He added: “Reece is an unbelievable player and I hope he comes back as soon as possible.

“To some extent, there is more edge [in this month’s games], because everyone wants to play [at the World Cup].
“It’s nice to get called up but it’s even better to be on the pitch. I’ve had to wait numerous times in the past for my opportunity. All I’m focused on is that chance to impress.”
The 23-year-old continued, saying he was pleased with England’s performance despite their scant preparation time.
“It was positive on the main. Coming into the game we had limited time together. We were very happy with the stuff we managed to do in the game against a good opponent.
“We should have won the game, but stuff happens. I’m happy with the way that I played.”
