Enrique Riquelme edges towards Real Madrid bid, cites members’ moral duty | OneFootball

Enrique Riquelme moved closer to a run for the Real Madrid presidency, while praising Florentino Pérez. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he spoke with caution about next steps.

Riquelme attended the VII Foro Internacional Expansión as founder and executive chairman of Grupo Cox, an energy and water company, with media focus on whether he will stand. He said he would address the issue later, noting the immediate hurdle is the deadline to present the required guarantee.

Describing himself as an entrepreneur drawn to challenges, he said it would be healthy, and respectful, to set out differing visions for Madrid’s next years. He linked that to transparency and democracy, and said members able to step forward have a moral and ethical responsibility to present an inspiring project.

The most important step is the guarantee needed to enter the election, which could be lodged with the central board on Thursday.

Riquelme stressed total respect for the institution and for Pérez, whom he called the architect of the best Madrid of the modern era. He added there was no plan for today, but there is one for the next five years, saying a strategy shaped for 2028 has been brought forward by three years.
