Enzo Fernandez trained with his Chelsea team-mates on Tuesday ahead of a possible return from injury against Ajax in the Champions League.
The midfielder, who has enjoyed a bright start to the season, was absent for Saturday’s 3-0 Premier League win away at Nottingham Forest after leaving international duty with Argentina early due to inflammation in his knee.
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed earlier on Tuesday that Fernandez was able to train with he squad the previous day, and would be in contention to face Ajax if he came through the Tuesday session unscathed.
“Enzo took part in the session yesterday,” he told reporters. “We have one more session this afternoon. We will see what we decide with him tomorrow.
“But we said before [that] it was not something we have to be worried about. It was just to try to protect Enzo.”
In a boost to Chelsea, Fernandez was involved in the first-team training session at Cobham on Tuesday and is now in line to face Ajax on Wednesday evening.
Chelsea host the Dutch giants at Stamford Bridge in their third league phase match in the Champions League, having lost 3-1 away to Bayern Munich in their first game before beating Benfica 1-0 at home.
