Sunderland have suffered a fresh double setback, with Nilson Angulo and Enzo Le Fée both missing Brighton’s visit to the Stadium of Light. Granit Xhaka and Brian Brobbey do return, but Régis Le Bris must reshuffle again ahead of next weekend’s Tyne-Wear derby.

According to Sunderland Echo, both players were injured in training. Sunderland are still assessing Angulo, who faces four to six weeks out and is ruled out of the derby, while Le Fée could be back sooner and the head coach hopes to have him available at Newcastle.

Angulo’s absence is set to push Chris Rigg to the right wing, with Chemsdine Talbi taking the left in place of Le Fée. Lutsharel Geertruida starts at right back ahead of Luke O’Nien, and Trai Hume returns at left back after his FA Cup suspension. Noah Sadiki also comes back into midfield following his ban.

The Sunderland XI is Ellborg in goal, a back four of Geertruida, Ballard, Alderete and Hume, midfield of Xhaka, Sadiki and Diarra, with Rigg and Talbi either side of Brobbey.

Sunderland’s bench is inexperienced at Premier League level, though Dennis Cirkin is back from a hamstring issue. Harrison, Jenson and Jaydon Jones are among the substitutes, along with midfielder Jack Whittaker. Milan Aleksic is absent as he features for the under-21s at Chelsea.

For Brighton, Danny Welbeck starts up front on his return to the XI and Lewis Dunk comes back after a minor injury.
