Injuries are really limiting Enzo Maresca’s selection right now, and the manager was happy to admit that in his press conference after the game today.
“It’s very difficult [to get rhythm]. There is a big risk for the ones that play to get an injury,” the Chelsea manager said.
There’s no doubt about that, we had our hearts in our mouths all game watching Moises Caicedo running around. He desperately needs a break, and Maresca doesn’t feel he can give him one.
“We lost Andrey Santos who will be out until after the international break. We have seven or eight players out. It is difficult to pick the same XI, but it is what it is. We need to adapt.”
Chelsea made 5 changes today, but without so many key players it’s constant compromise. Players like Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte just soak up minutes to help their teammates out, not because Maresca really wants to play them.

That last part is the most pertinent, of course. When we heard in the pre-match presser than Andrey had a problem, we were disappointed because this is when we need him most. When we saw him in street clothes behind the bench, not even in the squad at Stamford Bridge we were even more disappointed.
This news that he will miss the Liverpool game at the very least is even worse. It’s not quite clear if Maresca means he’ll be ready to play immediately after the international break or not. The only possible bright spot from this is that he misses out on a Brazil call up and can get some time to recover before we’re back in action in October.
Romeo Lavia got some minutes on Saturday but surely isn’t fit to play this weekend from the start.
