With Pep Guardiola having now left Manchester City, it is widely accepted that Enzo Maresca will be City’s next manager. Barring a spectacular U-turn, the Italian manager will be tasked with leading a new era for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. While Hugo Viana will have City’s summer transfer window mapped out, Maresca will have input on who City look to sign this summer. One player who continues to be named as a City transfer target is Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. It has now been reported that Maresca is desperate to sign the World Cup winner. The Italian manager reportedly believes that Fernandez can add an element to the City midfield that they currently lack.

Firstly, Florian Plettenberg has reported that Enzo Maresca is desperate for City to sign the combative midfielder. Furthermore, Plettenberg reports that Maresca believes that Fernandez can add a different element to Manchester City’s squad. Lastly, Plettenberg reports that PSG and Real Madrid have Enzo Fernandez on their shortlists.

The noise continues to grow louder that Manchester City could potentially move for Enzo Fernandez this summer. This summer does figure to be a busy one in terms of both incomings and outgoings for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. Manchester City’s midfield does need to be improved. The loss of Bernardo Silva does need to be covered. City’s pursuit of Elliot Anderson does seem to cover the loss of Bernardo. However, Enzo Maresca’s reported assumption that Enzo Fernandez can add what City’s midfield lacks is certainly interesting.

Enzo Fernandez brings goals and can create from midfield. City needs this element added to their play. Phil Foden, when at his best, provides this. Tijjani Reijnders also does this, but his debut season at Manchester City was a trying one. Enzo Fernandez is Premier League proven, and at Chelsea, his goals and ability to fashion opportunities for his teammates were vital. City could use another creative midfielder in this regard.

Also, losing Bernardo Silva does take some of the mongrel out of City’s play. Bernardo Silva was a feisty midfielder who so often did the ‘dirty work’ for his team. While City will continue to play possession based, free flowing football when Maresca takes over, they do need a player who will add bite and fight in midfield. Enzo Fernandez does this. He’s a combative and feisty midfielder. City could do with adding a midfielder like Enzo Fernandez who will do whatever it takes for his team.

Enzo Fernandez continues to be linked with a potential summer move to Manchester City. It also appears that Enzo Maresca is desperate to add a player to his City squad that he worked well with at Chelsea. Enzo Fernandez has attributes as a player that City need, so perhaps it is a move that they will make this summer to add goals and bite to their midfield.
