Comments made by Enzo Maresca earlier in the season have been contradicted after a list of Chelsea’s top scorers this season was released.

The Blues made a brilliant start to the season and certainly took many by surprise when they found themselves second in the table.

Chelsea had the opportunity to momentarily go top of the league if they beat Everton before Christmas, but they were held to a goalless draw, and have now won just two of their last eight league matches.

Maresca comments from earlier this season contradicted

The Blues were free flowing in attack earlier in the campaign, but the goals have somewhat dried up in recent weeks.

Maresca’s men are still the fifth highest scorers in the league, but a lack of an alternative to Nicolas Jackson is really haunting them.

Chelsea didn’t sign a striker in the January window and with both Marc Guiu and Jackson injured, Christopher Nkunku had to lead the line against Brighton, with Palmer also mentioned as a possible solution.

Maresca stated earlier in the season the Blues were no longer “Cole Palmer” FC but stats released by Sky Sports contradict those comments.

Earlier in the season the likes of Jackson and Madueke were chipping in with goals and taking some of the pressure off Palmer.

However, the numbers don’t lie and if Palmer isn’t scoring then Chelsea are generally struggling for goals, with summer signings Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto scoring just two league goals each.

Enzo Fernandez had a brief spell when he was chipping in with goals and assists from midfield, but the Blues desperately need the supporting cast to step up as Palmer can’t do it all on his own.

Nkunku isn’t a number nine and Maresca needs to find a way to get him scoring in the league as he’s a quality player in his own right.

Despite the vast investment in the squad it appears Chelsea are still reliant on Palmer for goals and that’s something which must change.
