In the 2004 Coupe de la Ligue final, FC Sochaux beat FC Nantes on penalties after 1-1. At 4-4 after 12 takers, Nantes keeper Mickaël Landreau tried a panenka for the win, Teddy Richert saved. Sochaux took the trophy.

On 8 May 2021, in an empty Etihad, Manchester City led Chelsea 1-0 and won a penalty before half-time. Sergio Agüero chipped, Édouard Mendy gathered, City lost 1-2 but still finished champions.

In 1989, during a Coupe de France shootout for Girondins de Bordeaux against AS Beauvais Oise, Éric Cantona went soft. The keeper was wrong-footed, yet the slow ball on a poor pitch was cleared by Eddy Caullery on the line.

In July 2024, Argentina and Ecuador drew 1-1 in a Copa América quarter-final. Lionel Messi hit the first shootout kick as a panenka, it struck the bar, Argentina advanced and lifted the trophy 10 days later.

Perhaps the boldest was Zinédine Zidane's bar-in in the 2006 World Cup final. Nine years later, his son Luca, then France's U17 keeper, hit the bar with a panenka against Belgium in the Euro U17 semi-final, then saved three as France won a final 4-1 against Germany.
