There was some noise surrounding Barcelona during the recent winter transfer window. While the club was primarily focusing on player renewals, there was speculation about possible transfers as well. However, Barcelona ultimately did not end up selling or buying any players.
Some revenue did end up coming in, mainly due to the operation involving former Barça midfielder Nico Gonzalez and Manchester City, but it was a quiet window otherwise. However, there were some players who were reportedly on the brink of leaving the club.
One of them was 24-year-old Spanish defender Eric Garcia, who reportedly had a few sides interested in his services. Ultimately, however, he ended up staying at the club mainly due to the conversation he had with Barcelona coach Hansi Flick and the German’s attempt to persuade him to stay.
However, as SPORT has highlighted, the player has stayed to be more than just a secondary player who rarely gets any playing time. Instead, he wants to showcase the strengths that he possesses and fight for opportunities just like everyone else in the team.
Against Deportivo Alaves, for instance, he showcased his own worth when the team needed ways to open up the opposition. With Ronald Araujo not being able to create too much from the back, Garcia was brought in at half-time to help Barcelona win a very important game for their La Liga season.
In half the game, he managed to string together 47 passes in total, and 46 of them were completed. With a 98% passing accuracy, Garcia was clearly effective in terms of playing out from the back with the ball. Touching the ball 56 times in total, he also made three clearances, and one block, and won the duels he participated in.
In many ways, Garcia has showcased that he will be competing for challenges and opportunities this season. While he wanted to leave previously, with both Girona and Como interested, it turns out that the player has trusted Flick’s words but the German coach will need to give him the chances he needs in order to fulfill his own promise to him as well.
