Sekhukhune United coach Eric Tinkler has set his sights on guiding the Limpopo club to a first-ever trophy in the South African topflight division, ahead of their clash against Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 semi-final on Saturday.

Babina Noko will visit the Cape Winelands outfit at the Danie Craven Stadium in the first meeting of the two-legged affair and will be eager to leave the mother city with a favorable result for the second leg scheduled for 23 August at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

With a proven track record of lifting two domestic cup titles in the form of the Telkom Knockout with Cape Town City in the 2016/17 season and the MTN8 trophy with the now-defunct SuperSport United the subsequent season, the 55-year-old mentor is now gunning for cup glory with Sekhukhune.

“That’s the mandate [to win a trophy] I have been given. I think we have assembled what we believe to be a strong and competitive squad, we were very busy over the off-season to ensure that we could bring in players of the caliber required,” said Tinkler.

“Our objective and our aim are to try and finish in the top three. The chairman has a long-term project and vision for the club, the introduction of a few younger players, especially this season versus last season.

“The chairman has obviously entrusted in me to try and bring success to Sekhukhune United, and that’s going to be my purpose and objective – no different to when I was at other clubs. I’m an ambitious coach; I want to win and achieve things.

Sekhukhune will draw inspiration from the fact that they have progressed past the quarterfinal stage of the MTN8 for the first time in their history, having fell short in the first round of the competition in their last two participations.
