According to L'Équipe, Morocco were declared AFCON 2025 winners by walkover on Tuesday after the final against Senegal was marred by incidents, including Senegal leaving the pitch. A recent precedent came in 2019, when Espérance Tunis won the African Champions League after Wydad Casablanca walked off mid-match.
In the second leg, Wydad left just before the hour after a goal was wrongly ruled offside while VAR was not working.
After an hour and a half of discussions, the game did not resume and Espérance were declared champions.
CAF then ordered the second leg to be replayed on neutral ground, a decision later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Months on, CAF confirmed Espérance’s title after Wydad’s CAS appeal failed.
Morocco were also involved in a walk-off at AFCON 1976, although it was not a conventional final. They left the pitch in protest while behind. They returned and earned a draw that sealed the trophy.
