The Egyptian national football team is facing an official complaint filed by the Ethiopian Football Federation with FIFA, following the match between the two sides last Friday, as part of the seventh round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.The game, held in Cairo, ended in a 2-0 victory for Egypt. The Pharaohs scored both their goals from the penalty spot: the first by Mohamed Salah in the 40th minute, and the second by Omar Marmoush in the 45th minute, just before halftime.
The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) condemned, in an official statement published on its social media, unacceptable behavior during the match, notably the use of lasers by fans and the disrespect of the national anthem. With this result, Ethiopia's chances of qualifying for the World Cup are now in jeopardy, despite three remaining matches in the qualifiers. The team currently sits fifth in Group A with 6 points. As for Egypt, they are edging closer to securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup and need only a single point in their next match against Burkina Faso to officially book their ticket.
