Roma secured their place in the Europa League play-offs with a crucial victory over Eintracht Frankfurt decided by Angelino and Eldor Shomurodov goals.

The Giallorossi knew they needed a victory to be sure of a place in the play-offs, going into the final matchday in 21st place. Bryan Cristante was still not fully fit and Devyne Rensch cup-tied, while second-placed Eintracht sold top scorer Omar Marmoush to Manchester City. Elye Wahi was ineligible, with Junior Dina Ebimbe and Nathanial Brown not fully fit, but Rasmus Kristensen faced his former club.

Artem Dovbyk really should’ve opened the scoring after 13 minutes when Lorenzo Pellegrini knocked down a Leandro Paredes ball over the top for Angelino to feed the Ukrainian, who shinned it over the bar from six yards.

Mile Svilar had to make an acrobatic reaction save to push the Hugo Larsson header out from under the bar, but Gianluca Mancini came even closer with a looping header from Paulo Dybala’s corner that bounced off the upright.

Roma were piling on the pressure and took the lead just before half-time when Mancini floated a cross to the back post for the Angelino volley from the tightest of angles, which squirmed in despite an attempted goal-line clearance.

Straight after the restart, Svilar had to time his interception perfectly to stop Hugo Ekitike sent through one-on-one, but Leandro Paredes was visibly furious after being substituted.

Roma doubled their lead with two substitutes combining, as Matias Soule flicked it over Theate with the outside of the boot and found Shomurodov with a cross-field pass, who sent Tuta to ground and managed to bundle it past the on-rushing goalkeeper into an empty net.
