Even Barcelona have built a better squad than Chelsea over the last few years – on a much smaller budget.

There is a lot to worry about at Chelsea at the moment, and the media focus this week has largely been on Liam Rosenior, who is getting the dreaded “vote of confidence” left right and centre.

But on the pitch there are things to worry about too. The sporting directors have spent hundreds of millions of pounds with desperately few true successes.

Chelsea lack top tier players despite spending

Which of the players in this squad, which they bought, look like they could be among the best in the world in their position one day? Estevao for sure. Maybe Joao Pedro. Is there anyone else?

Cole Palmer had a moment where he looked like he could be, Marc Cucurella is effective on his day, Moises Caicedo is very good at times but pretty bad at times too.

It was painful to look at Barcelona last night and see what they had coming off the bench to add firepower – Robert Lewandowski, Marcus Rashford and Roony Barghji.

Chelsea, having spent literally hundreds of millions more than the Catalans in the last few years, had Liam Delap and Alejandro Garnacho coming on when they needed a goal against Man City.

Barca did it by promoting and playing their academy players, allowing them to develop and saving their transfer funds for experienced players who can come in and make a serious impact right away, helping out the youngsters and helping earn results right off the bat.

When you’re taking lessons on how to run a club from Barcelona in 2026, something has gone seriously wrong.

In other news…

Chelsea are not improving under Liam Rosenior – in fact they seem to get worse with time to train.

All the briefs out there right now are claiming that Liam Rosenior is safe as Chelsea boss even if he can’t guide the team into the Champions League.
