Everton 2 - 0 Brighton & Hove Albion

Gambar artikel:Everton 2 - 0 Brighton & Hove Albion

The big inauguration day for the Hill Dickinson Stadium has finally arrived, with Everton beating The Seagulls in their first Premier League game at the new venue thanks to  two excellent goals created by Jack Grealish.

It has been a tumultuous journey, dating back many years if you think of the numerous false starts the club endured before Farhad Moshiri finally drove this stunning project forward on the banks of the Royal Blue Mersey, commissioning Dan Meis to create something special and appropriate for the club and its fans. Plenty said it would never be built… but we don't hear much from them any more!

The stands are steep, the close and rectangular shape and presence of Goodsion Park has been retained in spirit, unlike so many oval or round stadiums that have been built recently, and that should make it unique and intimate.

But come the hour, the focus will shift from the surroundings to the pitch, and the players David Moyes chooses to start this momentous game.

And David Moyes has somehow overcome his inherent conservatism to select both Jack Grealish and Kieran Dewsbury-Hall with Barry up front. Alcaraz, McNeil and Beto, who have all been very poor in pre-season and at Leeds, start on the bench.

Adam Aznou was listed on the subs bench but he was ruled out in the warm-up.

First Half

The visitors kicked off and proceeded to play keep ball, but Grealish got possession nd really tried to make something happen down the left. But it was Ndiaye who wanted to score the first goal but didn't hit his shot hard enough. Iroegbunam was key to keeping the pressure on but they repelled an early Garner long throw.

But Everton than fashioned a brilliant move , with Grealish in plenty of space, he advanced to the byline and cross

Brighton resisted the early surge from the Blues, and looked to take the initiative. But the Blues held firm and tried to build with more composure, but it was pretty scrappy, Ayari getting a shot off at Pickford.

Everton were trying to get Grealish involved wide left but Minteh was all over him. Grealsh Had to come inside for space but Iroegbunam lost the ball.  Dewsbury-Hall played Ndiaye forward but Barry ran far too early. Brighton did the long-ball and Mitoma clipped the top of the bar with his shot.

Brighton were cutting through too easily and Gana overran Minteh whose cross to Welbeck was a bit behind him and he missed an open goal, wellying over. At the other end, Grealish forced the first corner, put in by Garner to the near post.

But a fine Everton move involving Everton's best players saw them take the lead with a tremendous goal from Nday, who had started the move to Dewsbury-Hall. He picked out Grealish in lots of space for once, who drove forward and crossed with tremendous pace, IIiman Ndiaye bang on the money at the far post to smash it into the net for the first Everton goal at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium. And what a thrunerous roar that treated with

De Coyper was carded for grappling with Ndiaye to stop him escaping. But O'Brien's headed cross was stolen by Brighton and they countered at speed, Minteh thankfully called for fouling Tarkowski. Another midfield free-kick by Dewsbury-Hall was headed back across by Tarkowski but Everton were not retaining the second ball.

A tremendous Brighton attack needed some desperate Blues defending after Minteh got past Garner too easily. Iroegbunam was played in centrally and tried to do it all himself, firing a strong shot just wide.

Brighton kept coming forward and Mitoma was a real threat. Then a wicked deflection on Van Hecke's shot saw it beat Pickford but not the post. Iroegbunam was rationally late on Ayari: yellow card. Also for Wieffer on Grealish.

Dewsbury-Hall put in a very inviting ball to O'Brien at the back post but his header back in found Grealish but he was quickly closed down, Garner's follow-up shot was wide.

An unbelievably stupid backpass from Tarkowski saw O'Rielly anticipate it and Pickford did brilliantly to stop a certain goal for Brighton, who could easily be well in front, but it was Everton who went in ahead at the break.

Second Half

Brighton attacked brightly from the restart, Minteh again getting around his man, but Gana was in the way. Keane picked out Ndiaye with a superb crossfield ball but Ndiaye allowed the ball to squirm away from him.

Iroegbunan tried to break forward and was fouled, winning a dangerous free-kick for Dewsbury-Hall 25 yards out, but no-one got the message that it was put up to the far post. But Grealish then rolled it back to James Garner, who just smashed a gorgeous shot from outside the penalty area, just inside the post. Superb strike!

Brighton pushed up again, Minteh getting a corner. Ndiaye seemed to have a break on but he just surrendered the ball meekly. Brighton got the ball back into the Everton area but Wellbeck could not dig out the chance.

Jake O'Brien drove down the right and forced a corner that came to Barry but he could not keep his header down. Minteh surged again down the Everton left, Tarkowski with a key defection. Ayari got a chance to shoot as Everton failed to clear their lines, but it was straight at Pickford.

Come the hour mark, and time fo some changes by David Moyes, but not before Minteh again caused panic, Grealish in with a tremendous tackle for a corner to Brighton that Garner headed away after he was booked for dissent.

A tremendous run by Beto looked to have beaten Dunk but the Brighton defender found some extra speed to stop him shooting.  Iroegbunam departed reluctantly after going down with cramp possibly, McNeil on in his place for the last 20 minutes.

But Brighton were not going away easily, and they kept putting the Blues defence under pressure. And Minteh's shot was charged down by Dewsbury-Hall, whose hand was out in front of him. Penalty, despite the close quarters. Welbeck took an age before Jordan Pickford went the right way and stopped his weak effort, for an absolutely massive cheer from the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton wanted a penalty of their own when his cross seemed to hit Minteeh's arm, who then fouled the Everton man. But the free-kick to the near post was headed back out. Everton played a long series of passes that included another excellent crossfield ball by Keane to McNeil but the promising sequence went all the way back to Pickford who launched it long, and gifted it back to Brighton.

An exciting sequence saw Grealish set up McNeil, whose shot was scuffed, but Beto had a glorious chance but blasted it wide. Dewsbury-Hall then had a great run and fed the ball across to McNeil who should have scored but drove his shot wide.

More nice work from Grealish but Gana's ball was impossible for Beto to reach. Alcarz danced past Kadioglu who caught him late. A nice round of adulation for Grealish who went off for Armstrong with a few minutes left to play. Beto given a yellow card for trying to get the ball and catching Dunk in the process.

And the 7 minutes were finally played out, with the crowd in excellent mood on the back of a win that depended on two excellent goals created by Jack Grealish.

Everton:  Pickford, Keane, Tarkowski, O’Brien, Gueye, Garner [Y:62'], Iroegbunam [Y:39'] (71' McNeil), Grealish (90+3' Armstrong), Dewsbury-Hall [Y:], Ndiaye (64' Alcaraz), Barry (64' Beto [Y:90+5']).

Subs: Travers, Beto, Chermiti, Coleman, Alcaraz, Aznou (Campbell), Onyango.

Iregbenaum is absolute garbage, offers literally nothing other than height.

Yet you have a calm composed midfielder that can pass, assist, score, play across the whole of midfield if needed, take decent set pieces and works hard for the team in McNeil, and he's on the bench! Utterly baffling!!!

Brendan Fox 2 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:51:44

Good to see Moyes trusts Aznou so much, he sticks Iroegbunam or Garner as left-back to start the match with the same lopsided setup and formation as against Leeds – albeit with the addition of Grealish on from the start.

Derek Knox 3 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:54:00

I find Tim's inclusion a bit baffling too. When he first came, he was putting in good performances, but seems to have gone downhill on a skateboard ever since.

He was pretty inept against Leeds but he wasn't the only one in his favour. Still baffling though!

Ian Jones 4 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:54:06

Gary, you have to give these younger players time.

Appreciate what you say about McNeil but he is very one-footed, easy to work out which way he's going with the ball.

Dale Self 5 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:54:46

Can we do a quick background check on Lee Betts at VAR?

Mike Powell 6 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:59:34

Don't get why he is starting Tim, he was awful against Leeds.

Glad Barry is starting. COYB

Bob Parrington 7 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:01:45

Interesting watching the 15-year-old playing for Arsenal. Makes one think, doesn't it? And we're scared to play 19-year-olds, supposedly because they are too young for the Premier League. Maybe it's time for our management to grow up and realise the good that youth can do in the team.

Negativity gets us nowhere and I am shit scared that Moyes will start us with a negative attitude today. Hopefully not but history destroys my hopes.

Brendan Fox 8 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:06:19

You're nail on head Bob, other teams play youngsters knowing they are good enough to mix it with the senior players, also knowing blending on the best youth players keeps the Senior players on their toes and lifts the standards for competition for places.

Kevin Molloy 9 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:07:13

I don't think we'll see much of Beto or McNeil from now on, could well be gone next week. Those rumours on Ndiaye might also have some substance if we can spend the money, cos where does he fit with Grealish left and Dibling right?

I think Dewsbury-Hall must be left back, and Iroegbunam, being the only other No 8, is the No 8?

Raymond Fox 10 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:08:46

Its not a starting line up that I would have picked. Both our full backs are not full backs and yet we have two on the bench.

We need to be competitive in midfield or we are in for a rough day.

We will see, I'm hoping for some luck and a good result but I'm not overly confident.

Dave Cook 12 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:11:12

I know he's new and young but you'd think Aznou should be getting into the team with no other left-backs.

Derek Knox 13 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:12:34

Bob, it's the same in employment world, highly qualified people getting knocked back because they are lacking in experience. How do they get experience, if not given a chance?

The obverse is true as well, people getting in a position who don't deserve to be there, and making cock-up after cock-up!

Bob Parrington 14 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:14:15

Reminds me of "Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me!"

Play Aznou to balance the team!

Eddie Dunn 15 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:18:32

Square pegs in round holes once more. It doesn't bode well.

Kevin Molloy 16 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:21:17

Brignton will be so up for this. We got the 3 points at their place, but they won at a canter here last season. And they'll know how vulnerable we are with that team sheet and playing at a new stadium.

Let's just get to nil-nil at half-time and take it from there.

Bob Parrington 17 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:21:32

Good point, Derek. I regularly take Ubers and Taxis here in Oz and always chat with the divers. almost all of them are in versions of IT, well qualified.

When I question them as to why they are not employed in IT roles, the reply is regularly the same. "Well, we have to have at least 10 years experience to get the job! How can you have 10 years experience if you can't get the job in the first place?"

In the words of Rowan Dean, the world has gone mad!!!!

Rob Hooton 18 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:21:48

Maybe Tim is there for his pace and has been doing well in training? Seems another strange lineup, hope they have been practicing after the garbage first half last week!

Fingers crossed that it works this time, and we'll all see what Moyes seems to see and we can laud his genius after the match lol.

Derek Knox 20 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:23:58

Come on, Boys!

Let's give these a good Hill Dicking! :-)

Bob Parrington 21 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:26:20

Yes!

Let's go for a 3-0 win!

Mike Allison 22 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:26:38

Got to agree that I'd rather a left-footed left-back.

I'm a fan of Iroegbunam though, I think there's a real player there so I really hope he starts to convince people.

Christy Ring 23 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:29:30

Barry starting. I think Moyes has seen enough of Beto.

We need a striker, defensive midfielder, two fullbacks this week.

Mal van Schaick 24 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:30:14

A win should be on the cards, but Brighton have nothing to lose and I’m bothered by the team selection.

Paul Armstrong 25 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:31:48

Anybody got a decent link yet

Bob Parrington 26 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:34:16

Iroegbunam is no slouch and we should start to see him perform as the team settles in its formation.

I doubt 'settle' will not be there until we have Dibling on board. Then, plus a right-back. I reckon we will find balance in the squad.

Alan J Thompson 27 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:37:09

From what little I've seen of him I'd like to see Armstrong played.

He seems to put his foot on the ball looking for a forward through ball which may help out the others or draw opposition to him.

Bob Parrington 28 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:40:13

Peter Moore 30 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:50:12

Tim must be impressing Davey in training I suppose. Let's hope he is impressing us today, in an historic feel good performance and win at Hill Dicko on her first properly big day! COYB. UTFT. NSNO.

Derek Knox 31 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:54:08

Bob, good point with Braiden Graham, he may get a chance when he's 29 ! :-)

James MacGlashan 32 Posted 24/08/2025 at 13:59:33

Aznou ruled out in the warm up.

Derek Knox 33 Posted 24/08/2025 at 14:02:02

James, you mean Glassnou ? :-)

Paul Kossoff 34 Posted 24/08/2025 at 14:02:20

Here we go👮👮👮

Michael Kenrick 35 Posted 24/08/2025 at 14:51:08

Living dangerously

But that goal was quality, quality, quality.

Christine Foster 36 Posted 24/08/2025 at 14:55:03

Jesus mother of god.. they shall not pass today. Too lightweight up front, giving them far too much room, not closing down. Beto and Alcatraz on in the second half I think.

Ernie Baywood 37 Posted 24/08/2025 at 14:55:51

Pretty disjointed but with moments of real quality. We look like a team caught halfway between controlling and lumping the ball.

Maybe Tarkowski's worst 45 in blue. We're definitely lucky to be ahead but positives to take away too.

I really want to see Barry given something meaningful to chase. He's not hiding and he's working his socks off.

Grealish a class act on the ball. Reminds me of when we saw James for the first time. When they put their foot on the ball the game seems to slow down around them.

Interesting moment when Barry won a decent flick on but it went out of play instead of to Grealish. Jack seemed pretty disappointed with Barry's effort - some of the boys might need to get used to playing with players who have higher standards.

Michael Kenrick 38 Posted 24/08/2025 at 14:57:11

What the hell is that Ashley Young has on his ear?

A blinged-out hearing aid???

Rob Hooton 39 Posted 24/08/2025 at 14:59:01

Brilliant goal but boy have we rode our luck defensively, with some Pickford brilliance thrown into the mix.

Grealish and Ndiaye are two special players, we will need both fit and firing on all cylinders this season.

Si Cooper 40 Posted 24/08/2025 at 15:03:31

Bob, IT is hellishly competitive for jobs because it has too many people wanting the same work. Employers can set their targets high because they know someone will meet the criteria. Just getting a qualification guarantees you nothing.

Mike (22), agree on both points. Tim is fast becoming an easy target for slagging off when there are plenty just as patchy getting a free pass week after week. He needs to be more consistent but he's certainly not ‘absolute garbage'.

Christy (11), am I reading your post correctly? Mitoma would have McNeil on toast.

Rob Hooton 41 Posted 24/08/2025 at 15:06:12

Si, Mitóma almost had a ‘Gazza Euro 96 moment’, he’s one helluva player. Thankfully, we got away with it.

Michael Kenrick 42 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:01:59

Great dig from Grealish, commenting on his superb assist for Ndiaye's goal and how these two might make a tremendous partnership, saying Moyes had not played them together in training!

Bob Parrington 43 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:07:26

That's 2 penalties the twats owe us on VAR.

Disgraceful refereeing!

Ernie Baywood 45 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:08:16

3 points, a couple of really good goals and a bit of a feel good result.

Jordan making amends for another harsh penalty. I still can't believe that people continue to question him. Every time I watch other teams I'm taken aback by how far off Pickford's standard their keepers are. I think we've got very used to having an outstanding goalkeeper.

Probably best to gloss over some of the frailties. A few need to lift their games and meet the standards of others. There'll be a few that won't be able to.

Kevin Molloy 46 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:11:07

Grealish is better than I dared to hope, absolutely top notch.

Bobby Mallon 47 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:12:02

That was a top performance. Grealish, Ndiaye and Dewsbury-Hall all excellent. My MotM was Garner.

Just a thought: Why was Dewsbury-Hall's handball a pen but theirs 5 mins later not?

Ged Simpson 48 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:12:02

Shit folks. We won! We bloody won.

The penalty, Uefa, VAR etc. Beat them all.

Jaysus even TW can be happy for 5 minutes!

Yaaaaaay!

Annika Herbert 49 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:12:48

Nice to see Iroegbunam have such a good game, I think he can be a top player for us.

Good result in the end and that's our season up and running. Grealish was quality.

2/3 more quality signings this week and we might just have a competitive squad.

Fair play to Moyes too, I wasn't happy with the team selection but how wrong can you be? A weekend to enjoy.

George Cumiskey 50 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:13:24

They still keep you on edge for the 90 minutes. 😱

Christine Foster 51 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:13:26

Thank you.. that's all I wanted, off to bed, it's 3am.. smiling..

Ernie Baywood 52 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:14:14

Kevin, he definitely reminded me of when we saw James. His quality and confidence on the ball is incredible.

These guys are used to the highest of standards around them and it shows.

Ged Simpson 53 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:14:33

I know but TW aren't playing George!

Let's be happy!

Bob Parrington 54 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:16:09

We rode our luck but deserved the win. Just think we gave them too much space when they had the ball IMO. 3 points, Goodo!

Grealish makes a difference. And let's not let Ndiaye go to the hounds who are after him!!!!

Rob Hooton 55 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:18:34

Both Pickford and Grealish were immense and they won the game for us between them.

Lots of positives to take from that. If we can keep hold of all our players, sign a few more players, and get lucky with injuries, then we'll give most teams a game.

Jake FitzGerald 56 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:18:41

So satisfying watching them gel a bit more as the game progressed – confidence is everything.

As is positivity – add 3 or 4 players this week, Mykolenko back, and we can forget Leeds and pre-season – at last.

Jamie Crowley 57 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:19:03

What I want to know from anyone who was there in person – how was the stadium??

I thought it looked fantastic!!! What were anyone's "in person" takes from the new home?

Great game today. Good 3 points.

Christy Ring 58 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:20:37

Brilliant 3 points, Grealish was immense. A totally different performance, unlike Monday night.

I have to give special praise to Tim, played really well today, as did Garner. Hopefully 3/4 signings this week.

Bob Parrington 59 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:21:18

Jamie. Good question.

It did look and sound good on Stan.

Ian Jones 60 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:22:36

Okay, a bit lucky at times, but you need luck.

Feel sorry for those that are too quick to write off team selections and assume the worse... and then the worse doesn't happen.

Granted, Garner wouldn't be my first choice left-back but he did okay, as did Michael Keane and Tim Iroegbunam today.

Mark Taylor 61 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:22:57

Can't see how Jimmy G was Man of the Match, given Minteh had him on toast every time. But full credit to him for giving it a go in a position not remotely suited to him.

For those who didn't watch, the young left-back, Adam Aznou, was injured in the warm-up and tbh, from what I've seen of him so far, he looks like one who will need slow integration.

Uplifting to see a player like Grealish; I understand the reference to James and time on the ball, but he is a lot more dynamic and still seems to have his mojo.

Of the rest, Keane did well for a 4th choice centre-back. Iroegbunam had one of his better games for us, while Ndiaye is a rainmaker, someone we can't afford to lose.

Hopefully we will plug the very obvious gaps we still have over the next week or so.

Ian Bennett 62 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:23:38

Moyes with the inverted full-back.

Tactical genius! 😉.

Neil Lawson 63 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:23:40

Great result. Great 3 points. Brilliant day. However, I thought we were 2nd best and Hill Dickenson luck (apart from another ridiculous penalty) served us well.

Hopefully the level of performance will improve with returning players, so let's be optimistic (but there again, we are all Evertonians).

George Cumiskey 64 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:26:32

Gana was MotM for me with special mentions to Keane, Grealish, and Garner.

Andy Mead 65 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:26:55

Good performance all round.

What happened to Aznou in the warm up? Young Barry up front grew in to the game and Garner got over a tricky start to hammer in a second.

All-in-all, a very good win. Shout out to Keane as well. Did all the basics as he should.

Ernie Baywood 66 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:27:23

Ian, well, if you can't find an overlapping full-back then maybe you have to go for an inverted one.

That strike was worthy of our last overlapping left-back!

Ernie Baywood 67 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:29:48

Worth noting Barry's involvement in both goals, by the way.

Yes, he's a bit raw and we didn't give him much to work with, but he gave it a real go today... which is a standard that our last expensive young imported striker didn't reach.

Bob Parrington 68 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:32:55

Trying to imagine what we can achieve with the likes of Tyler Dibling on board.

Barry looks perhaps a better option to Beto. I'd like to see us use Braiden Graham in the squad as well.

Martin Berry 69 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:33:39

Considering the difficulties of have squares pegs in round holes in many places, I thought the players were brilliant today. It also shows that we can be a really good side if we get those players in to give us the right balance.

I think we will have a good week in the window. The Moyesiah may have a cunning plan?

Ian Linn 70 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:34:58

I thought Iroegbunam had a good game — he didn't deserve the pre game slagging he got here.

Will be a solid player for us.

Alan J Thompson 71 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:36:21

I'd normally submit my half time thoughts then at full time my overall view but thanks to Stan, who have taken over from Optus, it took 75 minutes to show the first half which then went straight to the second half which was 12 minutes old so I missed the 2nd goal and then took 50 minutes to show the remainder of that half.

We looked a lot better with Grealish on the left and Ndiaye on the right but Brighton were nowhere near as fast or energetic in the press as Leeds were and even then we could have let more than a couple in except for the woodwork, poor finishing and Pickford. Again this handball or ball-to-hand needs sorting out in what was another display of awful refereeing.

I'd like to see Gana do a lot better when in possession. Barry looked like it was some sort of friendly and the defence is not yet gelling as a unit. The positives being how good players in possession (Grealish and Ndiaye) are to the team.

Andy Walker 72 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:36:53

Michael 42. Yes, he did say that tongue in cheek. Maybe you'd have been happier if he'd played them together in training but not in a game?

What Jack also said which unsurprisingly you omitted, was that he knew he wanted to come to Everton within a couple of minutes of talking to Moyes in a video call.

Your anti-Moyes agenda on here is becoming tiresome and does you no favours.

We played pretty well considering we had no ‘proper' full-backs. Moyes has signed some exciting players. We should be optimistic and not stuck in some bitter agenda against our manager.

Andy Meighan 73 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:37:34

Brilliant save by Pickford from O'Reilly and a penalty save in the 2nd half to preserve our clean sheet.

Keep proving them wrong, Jordan — the best keeper in the league bar none.

Ryan Holroyd 74 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:40:53

Compared to Monday night's awful performance, today was much better. A bit fortunate maybe but we had the quality to win.

Can't wait for Dibling to come into the squad and hopefully a Number 6 and an experienced forward who can help Barry.

Kevin Naylor 75 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:43:06

Two solid games from Keane now.

He will be most unfortunate if he's dropped when Branthwaite is fit – especially the way Tarkowski has started.

Joe McMahon 76 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:44:24

I've been out all afternoon, as it will be a while before I get to BMD, due to my limited walking at the moment. But absolutely thrilled, at the result, and so glad the players rose to the occasion for first BMD match.

Can I ask what did the players do differently to the Leeds match? Or was Grealish in a class of his own?

Ryan Holroyd 77 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:44:43

Yes, Andy @72,

Michaels anti-Moyes agenda is pretty pathetic isn't it.

God knows what he thought of Kendall Mk 3, Walter Smith, Roberto Martinez, Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce, Marco Silva, Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa, Frank Lampard and Sean Dyche.

Mark Frere 78 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:47:42

Get in there! I can't say it was a great performance as we were second best for the majority of the match. We took our chances well though and Brighton were wasteful and unlucky at times with hitting the woodwork twice.

It was never a penalty in a million years... the shot was at point blank range - what was Dewsbury-Hall supposed to do differently not to concede a penalty? Hopefully we're getting our bad luck with poor officiating out of the way early doors and things will even themselves out over the course of the season.

On the evidence of our first two games, it's glaringly obviously we still need a deep lying central midfielder (or two) that can get control of the middle of the park. And a full-back (or two) that can affect the game much better in the final third of the pitch. 3-4 for additions needed before the transfer window slams shut methinks!

Raymond Fox 79 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:54:27

Hallelujah, just what the doctor ordered. I think I will stop giving my opinion before games, I thought we would struggle today.

That's what top players such as Grealish give you, the difference between winning or not. Tempt another star or two to come and we will be rolling along.

Our goalie is worth his weight in gold too, he very seldom lets silly goals in.

Steve Brown 80 Posted 24/08/2025 at 16:59:55

That was a virtuoso performance from Grealish, supported by Ndiaye and Dewsbury-Hall. They worked so well together and it was a pleasure to see players who were actually comfortable with the ball.

I thought Tim Iroegbunam and Gana really grew into the game. He may not have been MotM, but I thought Garner really persevered against Minteh. Keane was solid, but Tarkowski had a shocker in the first half. Gave them two gilt-edged chances on a plate.

Really liked Barry's hard work and endeavour, but we really need another forward as Beto looks lost.

And of course, a right-back and left-back!

Pat Kelly 81 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:00:22

Joe #76,

Without Grealish today we'd likely have lost the game. He drew players to him and usually emerged with the ball.

Made two assists, the first a classic. We have a real talent who stands out above the rest.

Andy Crooks 82 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:02:08

Ryan and Andy, why does someone who disagrees with you have an agenda?

I thought Moyes was shite against Leeds. Utterly shite. Today he was excellent.

l thought it was a magnificent effort from the coach and the players.

David Hallwood 83 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:09:17

Great day, great win. We did ride our luck at times but Brighton play great football with 2 top drawer wide men.

I thought Grealish was MotM by a country mile, he's got that zen about him — just like James had.

I know there's no chance of it happening, but as I'm laid up at the moment, I watched the 2 Spurs games, and I'd lurvve to see Richarlison back in a blue shirt, his movement is superb and he'd do really well with Grealish and Ndiaye.

You can dream... UTFT

Joe McMahon 84 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:12:52

Thanks Pat#81.

David West 85 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:22:01

Great result! When you consider the make-up of our defence, it's an excellent result against a very tricky opposition.

Grealish looks like he's relishing playing and being appreciated. Dewsbury-Hall tireless and showed quality, whike Ndiaye and Iroegbunam played well. Garner did a great job against a very dangerous winger today.

Barry showed a few touches but needs time; as the confidence of the team improves, so will his and his play.

Couple of players in and it's... Onwards and upwards.

Ian Bennett 86 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:25:02

Two assists, kept the ball, won fouls, throw-ins and corners. A lot to like about Grealish's performance.

Brighton had good chances, although the back 4 played well. For me, Gana was MotM. I thought he was everywhere, and was the difference that Brighton didn't have.

In Moyes We Trust.

Lee Courtliff 87 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:27:11

We won on my birthday... for once!!

Very impressed with the new stadium, I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of it when I took in my first view from the inside.

Equally impressed with our performance given the patched-up defence, it just goes to show how little I know that yesterday I was banging on about how we can't possibly play Garner at left-back again, then he goes and puts in a storming performance and chips in with a fine goal!

Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did, we're off out on Liverpool tonight for more than a few drinks.

David West 88 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:27:19

And Pickford probably won us the points in the end!

How the game could have changed when he saved after Tarkowski's howler, and then the penalty too.

Dynamite!!!!!

Annika Herbert 89 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:28:15

Well said Andy @ 82, I fully agree

Nick Page 90 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:32:34

I'll tell you who did well today, and deserves a lot of credit: Michael Keane.

Defended really well and played some cracking crossfield passes. Has had the criticism in the past but got to keep looking forward now. Well done, that man!

Ian Bennett 91 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:39:31

I think it's fair enough to call out the anti-Moyes brigade. They trot out the same old shit, blaming the club ills on him, and micro analyse every decision on a daily basis. The comments work both ways, or are they too sensitive to accept it?

The bottom line is we were shite before he came, and we were shite after he left. So trotting out the lack of trophies or away wins, is as futile as the rest of the Premier League era.

With a bit of patience, he's putting together a creative side that will be good to watch. And is moving us up the league.

No doubt the mob will be expecting more, but the club is moving forward in terms of quality. If you want to compete you need good players.

George Cumiskey 92 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:41:45

Andy Crooks spot on, just let people have their say without jumping on their backs.

Too many people policing this site – leave it to people who run it.

Christy Ring 93 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:44:10

We rode our luck in the first half, but deserved the win.

Grealish a breath of fresh air, and Iroegbunam and Gueye in midfield, there £100M+ midfielder taken off at half-time.

I just hope Ndiaye hasn't done his hamstring, seeing him do the post-match interview was a good sign hopefully.

Stuart Sharp 94 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:47:49

Well said, Nick Page. Keane had a great game.

If he'd made half the mistakes Tarkowski made, the pitchforks would be out.

Terry Farrell 95 Posted 24/08/2025 at 17:58:18

Gana and Pickford superb today. Iroegbunam and Grealish just behind them but both had great games.

Tarkowski had generally a good game but lax on the backpass and when he let it bounce.

About time we had the rub of the green. The ground is awesome.

Ged Simpson 97 Posted 24/08/2025 at 18:02:33

How loud was the ground?

Terry Farrell 99 Posted 24/08/2025 at 18:08:28

Neil ,you are hard to please! Ha ha.

The whole ground was singing Pickford's name. I think you might be outvoted!

Oliver Molloy 100 Posted 24/08/2025 at 18:31:04

If we had lost today, Moyes would have been shite.

My thoughts are he was the right choice at the right time for us and I think he will probably steer us in the right direction this season, but definitely his style of play is wide open to debate to those who want to see more flowing football with goals.Moyes is capable alright, but there is no doubt he is a defensive-minded coach.

I didn't know what to make of Grealish coming to us, but today we all saw his contribution. Defenders and midfielders doubling up on him should work to our advantage moving forward, today is just the start!

If we get another three players, I expect decent offers will be listened to for Beto and McNeil, and players heading out on loan.

Question to those of you were there today, watching on the telly the stadium seemed quiet at times, was it ?COYB

Danny O'Neill 101 Posted 24/08/2025 at 18:33:32

I couldn't be there today, but managed to catch it on TV.

We started a bit cagey and Brighton had two very close chances, testing the framework. But overall, I thought it was an even match. When we did get hold of the ball, we actually played some neat flowing football, as we saw with both goals. Very good and positive moves.

It's easy to give Grealish the plaudits and rightly so. He was outstanding for the time he was on the pitch,

Ndiaye was his usual self. Tricky, played his part and good to see him and Grealish on the pitch together. His instinct is sometimes to try too much on his own, but he likes the ball at his feet and trying to make something happen. First player to score at our new home in a competitive match.

For me, MotM has to be Pickford. A crucial save at his near post with the player clean through. And then the penalty save.

A call out for Garner. Not just for that low pile-driver of a goal, but once again, the right-footed central midfielder being ask to play left-back. Also Michael Keane, who had a very steady game. I didn't think Iroegbunham was as bad as some make out. He was wasteful at times, but stayed involved and showed some good touches.

Another mention for Tarkowski. He improved second half, but had a shocking first half.

So, 3 points that more than a few predicted wouldn't happen and the best we could hope for was a draw. A fitting victory in the new stadium's inaugural top flight fixture.

Dave Abrahams 102 Posted 24/08/2025 at 18:42:26

It was imperative that we won — we did, so I'm more than content with that.

Some good performances some not so good but I thought that Pickford saved the game for us. He's not my favourite player but that save just before half-time and then the penalty — not sure if it was a poor effort as I'm at the other end, but he out-bluffed the penalty taker who was waiting for Pickford to make his move but he didn't budge and that possibly unnerved him.

If the penalty had gone in, I think we would have gone on the defensive and could have lost the game although Brighton certainly had enough chances to win the game overall — but they didn't and all's well that ends well.

So everyone went home happy on this special day.

Kunal Desai 103 Posted 24/08/2025 at 18:54:10

We have finally got that monkey off our back having not won a game in August over the last four seasons.

Rode our luck in that first half but in the end the margin of victory could have been more.

Grealish was excellent and Pickford immense. Great feeling to get our first 3 points early on and not having to wait usually another month.

Dibling almost done, let's get a few more in later this week. I imagine we'll utlise the remaining loans available (one domestic and two European). A right-back, defensive midfielder and another forward in.

John Charles 104 Posted 24/08/2025 at 18:55:05

From my seat, we deserved the win. Yes, they had some chances but we did what was needed.

Pickford, Grealish and Keane were very good; Tarkkowsi not so much.

The ground was loud when it got going but long periods of quietness (as at Goodison). A great day all round.

Barry Williams 105 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:02:59

Talk about Everton being lucky today – well, despite us playing really badly against Leeds, the luck wasn't with Everton – the penalty call was atrocious.

The one today wasn't cut and dried either – but (unsurprisingly) given, so any luck today was earned. No mention of the handball in the opposition's box either!

I cannot understand why people are asking for certain players now to be sold because other players have come in; short on numbers – more than ever, it is a squad game, competition for places breeds better performances, the more competition the better, the better the subs bench, the better the on field performance.

And then there are injuries, suspensions and a loss of form. Plus, it is better to bring in youngsters to a team that has competition and therefore less pressure on them than the alternative.

Progress is being made.

Ben King 106 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:08:53

Superb and important win to lift the doom and gloom, be more attractive to signings, start the new tenure at the new stadium in a positive fashion, and to give us fans something to cheer about

2 terrific goals too and good performance from Pickford, Garner, Keane, Grealish, Ndiaye and Gana

What a shame we don't have a proven striker up top. Barry did some good things – let's hope he develops. I wonder if we can swap Beto with another quality striker?

Well done, boys and fans.

Oliver Molloy 107 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:09:04

The US-style half-time interviews are creeping in on all sports – I agree; hope somebody tells them to feck off live on air soon.

Female presenters are here to stay and that's okay, and like male presenters, many of them are absolute shite!

Raymond Fox 108 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:10:44

If Grealish stays fit, he will create a bin full of goals for us.

I think we should have a sweep about how many he does, I'm going high — more than 30.

Mick O'Malley 109 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:16:15

I don't know if this is true but I've just read a post on BBC saying that 126 decibels was recorded in the ground making it the 5th loudest noise ever in a football stadium... as I said, it's something I read, so I don't know if it's true.

Agree with the shout out for Keane today, it was Tarkowski who looked the dodgy one today and not for the first time, Keane would get slaughtered if he defended like he did today. Jake O'Brien dealt with Mitoma well today.

We all see the game differently, we are all entitled to our views and should be able to post without getting some snarky reply.

I thought Barry done well today on his first Premier League start, played his part in both goals. Isn't it great being able to give Grealish the ball in tight spaces knowing he'll look after the ball and get us up the pitch. UTFT

Neil Cremin 110 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:19:24

Terry,

I can take it on the chin but every time we passed the ball back to him (and that was too often which highlights our need for a midfielder to link play) made me very nervous of an impending self-destruction.

I am an outlier, I know.

Dale Self 111 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:20:10

I don't want in that argument but just because someone is anti-Moyes does not imply they cannot properly critique his selections and tactics.

Happy Birthday Lee 87!

As a mobster commenter, I was impressed with the purpose of how we advanced the ball. I could see early on why Moyes wanted Tim on the pitch in an advanced role. He and Dewsbury-Hall did some good early work getting the ball through midfield and placing balls to Jack and Ilie.

Having two ball carriers makes a huge difference. The left flowed more than the right but that possession opened up space in the middle for Dewsbury-Hall to get positioned with some vision. We weren't running backward to keep possession, there were lines moving together. Being able to get it wide left or right to set up around Brighton's box was a solid development. If that eleven can just take that on the road, we will be fine.

Much of our disagreement about Moyes could be about stuff you don't know will work until you try it. And that is after you give it proper time to work. We all saw a player in Tim but positioning and other things needed some work. Last week suck, this week brill. It may have been that he needed to work through some complex instructions. During that time we will exchange views about OFM.

Just wait until we start with the "well, whose to say other managers couldn't take this group farther?"

Peter Mitchell 112 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:21:04

Neil Cremin – what planet are you on?

Pickford was absolutely outstanding today and we would have lost that match without him.

Andy Crooks 113 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:25:21

Oliver, if we had lost today, Moyes would have had horrendous abuse. I would have been leading it. It's the way it is and why he earns money beyond our wildest dreams.

But he did well, so all is good till next time. I thought we were bloody great today, by the way. Grealish is just fucking brilliant!!

Terry Farrell 114 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:26:42

Neil, it's all about opinions, mate, and you are entitled to yours.

He did wack it into touch a couple of times but that's because he was trying to put it on O'Brien's head rather than always put it up the middle.

Jonathan Oppenheimer 115 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:41:05

Rode our luck, but lots of positives to take away. Obviously Grealish and Pickford are world-class (and I was wrong to question the Grealish move). Ndiaye and Dewsbury-Hall also excellent, Keane too.

No way to make any big conclusions about the state of things, given how far we have to go and the unknowns of incomings. If Dibling comes in, I imagine Ndiaye moves out left and Grealish more centrally. Iroebugnam to the bench, despite proving doubters wrong today, he's not quite at the level we need just yet.

With Mykolenko back left and Garner in the middle, plus a true right-back, we're an entirely different squad. I still think O'Brien replaces Tarkowski sooner rather than later once Branthwaite is healthy.

Most importantly, a glorious way to open the new stadium. 2 brilliant goals, crowd was loud, team weathered the storm and looked classy on the ball for the first time in years. UTFT!

Brendan McLaughlin 116 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:45:18

Fair enough Andy #115

But not everyone is like you.

When you take a comment from Grealish as Michael did #42 and interpret it very negatively (when a very positive interpretation is equally, if not more so, likely) it's difficult not to think... agenda.

Delighted at the result today. Pleased for the fans who witnessed that historic event and the many others who were not there to see it in person. Pleased for all the players and Jack Grealish in particular.

Wonderful occasion for David Moyes... well deserved.

Neil Cremin 117 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:51:43

Plant Earth, I hope, Peter.

My opinion. Brilliant penalty save but distribution was woeful. He would be better giving it to Keane who, on today's performance, can put it on a sixpence.

Ray Jacques 118 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:55:08

For the first time in ages, we have a few ball carriers in Grealish, Ndiaye and Dewsbury-Hall. We may finally get some decent possession.

We now need a couple of full-backs who can run outside and forward of these guys.

Rob Dolby 119 Posted 24/08/2025 at 19:59:13

Neil 99, If Pickford can't impress you with 70 yard cross field passes to wingers or to a pair of strikers who can't trap a bag of cement I give up. Is there such a thing as a regulation 1 on 1 save?

He is the best keeper we have had and runs Southall close as my best ever.

We did ride our luck today. For all of the stick Keane gets I thought he was fantastic today as was O'Brien and Garner at the back. Tarkowski contributed more after we scored the 2nd with some good headers.

I thought their left back was lucky to stay on the pitch. Already booked and tripping Tim up on the edge of the box should have seen 2nd yellow imo.

That's 2 contentious pens in 2 games. If they just said anything that hits the arm is a pen at least we would all know but as it stands the referees are so inconsistent. Could anyone see those 2 pens given against Man City or Chelsea.

It's obvious Grealish is on a different level. Decision making, tempo of play and quality counts and he has it.

On the downside Barry looks a mile off, God knows where Dibling fits in. Kdh is ok on the ball but lightweight off it.

My first visit to bmd and it's hard not to be impressed. I am in the north stand and thought it was all good if not a little sterile compared to Goodison.

Ray Jacques 120 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:00:19

I forgot to mention. I usually slaughter Michael Keane but thought he was excellent today. Some of his long passing was off the charts.

Eugene Ruane 121 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:11:52

Neil Copeland 124 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:22:44

Sky reporting that DM pretty confirmed Dibling at his post match conference

Kieran Kinsella 125 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:24:58

I read some criticism of us today and read we ride our luck etc. but top quality players bring game changing quality to a game. Eg Pickford and Grealish. I watched City win 4-0 last week and Wolves had lots of pressure and no lack of effort. City though crafted 4 brilliantly worked goals. That’s what good players and teams do. Today was no different. Frustrating for Brighton but the two real quality players we have showed their magic. The supporting cast also mostly played well. That’s football. A win is a win and I’ve never turned my nose up at a 1-0 win with a goal scored off someone’s ass after being under the cosh for 90 minutes. So I’m delighted with a 2-0 with moments of real quality at either end of the pitch. COYB

Neil Copeland 126 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:30:12

Kieran, I think that is a decent summary mate. Goals win games and quality shines through. How many times in the past have we put in a good performance against better teams only to lose? And then blamed it on everything bar the kitchen sink when the real difference has been quality players.

Kieran Kinsella 127 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:31:22

Cheers Neil. Exactly. In recent times it’s a rare luxury for us to benefit from such moments of quality but long may it continue.

Kieran Kinsella 128 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:34:27

Also Neil, was the atmosphere as good as it seemed on tv. My biggest worry was replicating the Goodison vibe but on TV at least it seemed like that kind of intimidating environment for the opposition.

Jeff Armstrong 129 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:42:31

Agreed, Michael Keane far outshone Tarkowski today, Grealish was excellent, doesn’t give up possession easily if at all.

He and Dewsbury Hall seemed to be developing an understanding and Tim Irogbunam had a good game too, Barry grew into the game but he and Beto are far too similar, don’t understand that tbh, not great recruitment.

Garner is not a LB obviously but is filling in well, great strike for the goal.

Atmosphere was good, lots of people realised it’s up to us fans to try to create the atmosphere wherever we are in the stadium, there’s no St End anymore to rely on, it’s up to EVERYONE to get the ground bouncing, also the players as Pickford proved with that outstanding moment, he psyched Wellbeck out big time.

Great day out at BMD let’s beat Mansfield with a couple of reserves and then get an away win under our belt.

Neil Copeland 130 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:42:48

I would say the atmosphere in the build up immediately before ko was brilliant.

There were quiet periods, particularly in the first half. The second half was, I thought, much noisier probably because everyone had relaxed a little (if that is ever possible with Everton) when the second goal went in.

At times it was very loud with a capital ‘v’. Difficult to compare with Goodison which is more intimate. Different but will be equally as good although probably louder in time. The noise echoes around the stadium.

Les Callan 131 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:44:42

Kieran. The atmosphere was electric.

Kieran Kinsella 132 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:49:35

That’s good. Only criticism I’d have is id like them to paint the concrete blue. The stairwells have the look of St James’ park lol

Oliver Molloy 133 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:50:21

Andy @ 115Agree regards your thoughts on Moyes had we lost, disagree with you regards being great - we were definitely much better than Monday past but luck and Grealish was on our side today - much work to be done.

Kieran Kinsella 134 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:52:36

Oliver

Yes but it wasn’t luck Grealish was on our side or indeed Pickford. It was recruitment

Peter Mitchell 135 Posted 24/08/2025 at 20:57:49

Neil @119 - DM said the same in his post-match conference re: distribution, but also said that his saves were both extremely important and fantastic, making the difference between winning and possibly losing. I respect your opinion, but respectfully hugely disagree with it!

Josh Horne 136 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:01:03

Not a great performance, we were very disjointed as a team and lacking composure at the back.

It was so important that we scored first and won this match. Huge pressure on the players shoulders today and they delivered.

Allen Rodgers 137 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:02:32

Yes Neil @132 the noise is different to Goodison. I'm in the Lower East and it bounces down and echoes from the South Stand. Difficult to describe but today was as loud if not louder than Goodison at times.Disappointed I couldn't get a drink after the game, I thought the bars were going to stay open for a time ?

Peter Mitchell 138 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:03:06

For me, this shows a glimpse of our possible future. Grealish makes a difference by just being on the pitch - the opposition have to put 2 players on him at all times, which frees up Ndiaye to work his magic (Leeds were able to put 2 markers on him, as no Grealish to worry about). If/when we get Dibling, the oppo will have 3 "ballers" to worry about - that will provide us with many more opportunities to score in my view. Just need to sort out the defence now, with an RB and some further cover (possibly someone who can cover CB and LB?), plus a centre mid and possibly another striker?

Kevin Molloy 139 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:03:30

when's the last time we had a player who spreads genuine panic through the opposition (and rightly so). the nonchalance with which he set the first goal up, didn't try and beat him three times, just got the half yard he knew he needed, and then bang, job done. he does everything at a canter, we are suddenly a very dangerous team to play, cos we can be really struggling, but we now know if we get the ball to this chap, the whole game opens up.KDH is also going to be great fun to watch, and how he links up with the Holy Greal. And if we get this Dibling deal over the line this will be the best week in decades.

Brendan McLaughlin 140 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:06:48

Kieran #136

Do you extend that to the manager?

Andy Crooks 141 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:10:24

Kevin, yes, good post

Peter Mills 142 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:13:31

I’ve been rather ambivalent about the stadium during the two test events I’ve attended, but today has converted me. It looked, and felt, magnificent.

There were sufficient occasions when the volume rose to make me believe it can be the bear pit we love.

We were lucky at times, we could have conceded four or five, but we didn’t, and the two goals we scored were excellent. Winning was absolutely crucial, and the players worked their hearts out.

What a day. My son and I were fortunate enough to be invited to corporate hospitality, top of the range at that - it was bloody great.

Looking forward to Wednesday, what sort of team do we send out? Does Grealish start?, come off the bench? I assume Travers in goal? Any kids? Braidan Graham perhaps.

Andy Crooks 144 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:28:00

Guys just realized the RS have NEVER even scored a goal at our home stadium. Kings of Merseyside COYB

Rob Jones 148 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:47:19

Seeing Yankuba Minteh being so excellent on their wing today made me hate DCL a little bit. If his wage demands hadn't been so fucking unrealistic, we'd have had Minteh, and gotten a fee for that perpetually injured prat Calvert-Lewin.

Kevin Molloy 149 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:50:51

And the greedy little tyke could have had a year playing in the champions league.

Jeff Armstrong 150 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:53:36

Correct Rob # 150, that deal almost happened but DCL ends up on Leed’s treatment table and Minteh at BHA, He was decent first half today, could’ve done with him on our right side this past 12 months.

Edward Rogers 151 Posted 24/08/2025 at 22:08:14

Don't know what's more nerve-wracking, watching Everton or watching Tommy Fleetwood 🫣

Jonathan Oppenheimer 152 Posted 24/08/2025 at 22:19:04

Referee’s take on the 3 big decisions of the past week:

Yes, it was a penalty on KDH and yes, their left back should’ve been sent off for a second caution. Might seem harsh on KDH, but no choice but to call it.

Regarding Tarkowski last week, my referee colleagues and I are divided. I don’t think it was a penalty, but others I respect think it was. The bigger issue last week was that the assistant (who had missed calls earlier in the match) likely gave the call, and he has no angle to determine that. At that point, overturning it was hard to do, though I wish Kavanaugh had been sent to look at it on his own.

Mike Price 153 Posted 24/08/2025 at 22:22:00

Tommy Fleetwood 🥂 Best day ever as an Evertonian.

Jerome Shields 154 Posted 24/08/2025 at 22:27:52

I thought we were poor in defence, Tarkowski seemed lost at times, which he sometimes can do. I thought the defence was better against Leeds. Pickford luckily was excellent.

The defensive midfield pivot of Gueye and Iroegbunam worked well and was proactive rather than reactive in this game. The attacking midfield pairing of Dewsbury-Hall and Grealish worked well, a pairing that was needed, rather than box-to-box. They brought more players into the attack with better passing and movement.

I thought Everton would have benefited from the physically of Beto. Barry had good touches but did not impose his presence. Brighton's defence had too much room.

Moyes, by being more positive, made such a difference. Against Leeds, he gave them too much respect. Standing off Leeds was a cardinal error. If Everton had imposed themselves more, they would have won that game as well.

Jonathan Oppenheimer 155 Posted 24/08/2025 at 22:45:38

To those who have knocked Barry, and me being someone who has doubts bringing him in was the right move, I’d reiterate what others have noted, that he had a hand in both goals through his hold up play. Definitely raw, and not as powerful as Beto, but I think his ceiling his far higher than Beto, and I liked Moyes starting him from the off.

Christy Ring 156 Posted 24/08/2025 at 22:55:48

Double win, with Tommy Fleetwood winning his first PGA title, nice touch with Justin Rose & Shane Lowry waiting to congratulate him.

Don Alexander 157 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:00:35

Brighton will feel hard done to, except in receiving a(nother) ludicrous penalty, but the team coped well on a very testing day on so many levels.

And for the record I too had and retain my doubts about DM's record as our manager throughout the hundreds of games he's managed to achieve nigh on zero points against teams at the top of the league but maybe at this stage in his very lucky career he'll find a way to improve.

In the meantime I empathise with our Mr Kenrick.

Tony Abrahams 158 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:01:33

That was also my impression of Barry, Jonathan.

Jamie C, the best way to describe the stadium, is by explaining that it is definitely befitting of the old Everton, when we were the greatest team in the land💙

The last day at Goodison was, and was always going to be be a very emotional day, but when I first saw the pitch, and then looked around the stadium today, I was completely blown away.

Then I got to my seat, began to take it all in, and when the siren started leading up to Z-Cars, I honestly began to feel even more emotional than when I walked out of Goodison Pk, for the last time.

Although we had massive roots there, Goodison felt cursed way before the very end, so it was noticeable that Pickford’s goal, had a feeling that it had been blessed with Holy-Water, during the first half today, and if I can take one thing from today, then wouldn’t it be lovely if Bramley Moore, becomes a lucky ground🍀.

How uncanny that the fixture today was played on the very same date as the very first match at Goodison, and how even more uncanny that N’Diaye, became the last player to score at Goodison, and the first to score at Bramley Moore, just like a player called Geary, was the last to score at Anfield and the first to score at Goodison Park, all those years ago?

Danny Baily 159 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:02:56

Haven't seen a single aerial shot of the new ground with town in the background. I know they wanted to get an image of GP in the distance, but surely the most impressive aerial shots are the ones with the city centre as the backdrop?

Christy Ring 160 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:04:44

Don #157 could you not just say well done Moyes, to be honest embarrassing.

Colin Glassar 161 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:06:07

Tony, your last paragraph gave me the chills. What a coincidence.

Nicolas Piñon 162 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:20:33

.My wife is pregnant february is the birth date aproximately;im scared to death (never been the most optimistic person in the world) but next year I hopefully go and visit the stadium with the newborn. That could be something to look forward to apart from this team thats gelling up slowly but well. After two games I dare to say we have a better balance in the squad than last year. Barrys got good tools in his back, hell be useful although raw. Tim reminds me of yaya toure with that strong kick of the ball. Much better than doucs. KDH lots of composure; excellent keanes long range balls. Pickford is class. Garner, oh jimmy garner.Three more signings would be excellent. Asking too much?

Tommy Fleetwood, an Everton fan, has finally won on the PGA Tour the day Everton played for the first time officialy in the stunning new Hill Dicksinson. Today the world is blue.

COYB!!

Don Alexander 163 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:20:46

Christy, because of his history with us. where he talked the talk to a mega salary without ever looking like a trophy winner but maybe at this stage in his very lucky career he'll find a way to improve.

There, I've said it again. I hope it comes to pass!

Liam Mogan 164 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:22:25

I don't think Jack Grealish gave the ball away today. The more players we have who can actually keep the ball, the better we will be. Not rocket science.

I've struggled to be excited about the new stadium as I didn't want to leave Goodison. But today gave a glimpse that it could become something extraordinary.

John Raftery 165 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:31:42

A great day. Quality players make such a difference. We now have several of them in attacking positions; players who can trouble opponents and excite us. Our squad is far from the finished article but we are moving in the right direction.

Don Alexander 166 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:34:09

Tony A, brilliant post again on the effect of "Toffeeness" in the new stadium - but spooky last para!

Reminds me of two former USA presidents who were assassinated, each succeeded by blokes called Johnson, to varying results.

(Other Toffee anoraks who also need to get out more may be interested to research Lincoln/Kennedy spooky coincidences!)

Neil Tyrrell 167 Posted 24/08/2025 at 23:44:00

Hard to pick a MotM today - Pickford, Grealish, Ndiaye, Keane, and Gueye were all immense. Garner never shirked playing out of position. Great christening for the new ground (which looked amazing on TV, can't wait to see it under the lights!). Great day of sports overall:

Everton win

Tommy wins the FedEx

Brooke Henderson wins the Canadian Open 🇨🇦

Gonna be hungover at work tomorrow, too much to celebrate

Brian Wilkinson 168 Posted 25/08/2025 at 00:04:08

Neil throw in Wigan Warriors beating Wakefield 44-2, been a top Sunday for me, both my teams winning on the same Day and to cap it all off, on the shuttle bus to the stadium, Duncan McKenzie gets on the same bus as me to the stadium.

Tommy Fleetwood winning the golf topped it off nicely.

I used to think Bill cursed Goodison, but after riding some luck today, our luck might be changing at the new stadium.

Neil Tyrrell 169 Posted 25/08/2025 at 00:12:03

All 3 of my sons got in today thanks to a friends holiday, I'm sure they will still be telling their grand and great grandkids in 50 years time! UTFT good times coming! Wow Grealish, N'Diaye, KDH etc. Can't wait to see Dibling and maybe a few extra wildcards at full back, centre mid, maybe even an extra winger and striker.

Si Cooper 171 Posted 24/08/2025 at 00:27:54

Don (166), coincidences are always ‘spooky’ but not necessarily indicative of anything supernatural.

Congrats to Tommy Fleetwood.

Good to see balanced assessments of likes of Keane, Tim and Pickers.

Davey Moyes set things up to suit / get the best out of Jack and Illy and it paid off, although we rode a fair amount of luck as well.

Jimmy Garner was always going to put the effort in but Jack absolutely transformed his reluctance to overlap that stifled the left side against Leeds into a virtue today. What a goal to reward his effort. You won’t see the ball struck better.

I thought the Sky coverage was immensely respectful and complimentary to the club (which I thought we got for the last Goodison game as well). Contrasts greatly with Match of the Day who left out loads of pretty decent action and didn’t even revisit the shocking penalty award in the analysis. KDH’s arm was in entirely natural position and ball blasted straight at him from all of five foot away. Imbecilic decision by ref, unbelievable that VAR official simply backed his decision.

I think a week ago many of us would have snatched at it if we’d been offered 3 points from our first 2 fixtures. Still improvement(s) needed. Hopefully that will come through some (more) brilliant signings this week and the new guys adjusting quickly.

Brian (168), that Wigan was easily predictable. Much more impressive was Saints victory on Friday. I’d become convinced one of Saints or Everton could win any given weekend, but never both together.

Neil Tyrrell 172 Posted 25/08/2025 at 00:38:22

Jerome Shields 175 Posted 25/08/2025 at 01:47:50

I think Grealish relishes playing for Everton.Apparently he was Aston Villas tallisman. It must have been difficult being as good as he is and not getting selected at Man City.Things will improve with such a player as him who is really bought into playing for Everton.

Moyes has found, his McGinn, Rice and Bowen, partnered by a Dewsbury and owners who can afford to keep him.I do think that Grealish's ability as a player maker, will encourage Moyes to be more positive and also bring in more young players to the first team.

A really positive development and the New Stadium really looked the part.

Annika Herbert 176 Posted 25/08/2025 at 02:42:15

Ian @ 91, it’s also fair to call out the Moyes happy clappers then? Given your pro Moyes views but disdain of anyone criticising him.

I was totally against his return but happily admitted what a great job he did in transforming our fortunes after his return.

But that doesn’t make him immune from criticism at times. Against Leeds he got it horribly wrong. This time he got it right, especially given the players he had to choose from.

Credit where it’s due, but criticism when it’s due too.

Whoever wrote this match report isn't the Michael Kenrick we're use to.

You use AI for this one MK?

Matt Traynor 179 Posted 25/08/2025 at 04:36:15

Si #171, on the penalty decision and VAR not overturning it, I'm not sure what's in the rules, but isn't it a bit like "umpire's call" in cricket? Unless it's blindingly obvious, they won't call the ref to the monitor (and even then, he could still keep to his decision).

I am at a loss to why VAR has so many problems in the Premier League - it seems not to be the case in other leagues, which suggests the problem may be within PGMOL and their implementation.

Jamie Crowley 180 Posted 25/08/2025 at 04:36:52

Tony back @ 158 -

Thank you m'man! Really glad the new stadium is getting great reviews, and happy to hear it's got the acoustics necessary to make it a war bunker.

Peter Mills was impressed as well, but to be fair Pete, the corporate boxes do always equate to a good experience. Happy you got the first class treatment.

Finally -

A great Blue won his first ever PGA Tour event today. His caddy's yardage book has a royal blue cover with EFC on the front. A man who "couldn't win the big one" here America not only got over the hump, but won the biggest prize in golf today by doing it.

Congratulations to Tommy Fleetwood. Thrilled for the kid. UTFT, UTFTommy.

Mike Gaynes 182 Posted 25/08/2025 at 07:16:13

To those rightfully praising Barry for his performance today, be aware he will requiretremendous patience from all of us. We haven't seen it yet, because he hasn't had a chance in the box, but for all his talents he has a great deal to learn as a finisher. Was known in Italy for missing sitters -- blasting the ball over the bar from eight yards -- and then apologizing to whoever set him up. So be prepared when it happens.

Neil #172, agreed, what a turnaround for young Tim in six days. Superb.

Kevin #139, for somebody who described our new management team with words like "clowns" and "unprofessionalism" and "farce"... that sounds like something perilously close to an endorsement. If the Dibling deal closes, are you prepared for a crow dinner?

Jamie #180, just a couple weeks ago I predicted he would never, ever do it. Couldn't make the big putt. So glad I was wrong.

Lee #87... Mazel tov! Glad it was a great birthday for you.

Colin Glassar 183 Posted 25/08/2025 at 07:29:18

This week is going to be insane in the transfer window.

Everton, I believe, will sign a minimum of three players (apart from Dibling). I’m not sure who to be exact but Fort (Barcelona) is an interesting one as he can play RB and CB. Bissouma (despite his baggage). Vardy (on a free is a no-brainer) and perhaps a surprise deal out of left field - Richarlison (loan?). So, 4-5 new faces this week?

All I know is we need further strengthening ahead of a very long season.

Gerry Quinn 184 Posted 25/08/2025 at 08:34:01

The Everton boys must also have inspired our favourite Evertonian golfer Tommy Fleetwood win his first PGA Tour Championship event in the USA - congrats to Tommy who is fanatical about Everton

John Burns 185 Posted 25/08/2025 at 08:39:52

Thanks to all those who have shared their experience being at the first league match at the new stadium. Talk about a ‘once in a lifetime experience’. It must have been incredible.

The pre-match Sky coverage, as has already been said, was also good. The backdrop I particularly enjoyed was the one overlooking the river. It looked majestic on a balmy summers day. I wonder what it will look like on a stormy November night!

The commentator said the pitch was 5 metres longer than Goodison, which surprised me. In the past we have narrowed Goodison to accommodate some of our gutless and guileless football. Could it be a deliberate glimpse to a future of outrageously adventurous winning football? Here’s hoping!

Rob Jones 186 Posted 25/08/2025 at 08:42:00

Don, I hope all of us are as "lucky" in our chosen fields as David Moyes.

Let's leave it at that.

Mark Murphy 187 Posted 25/08/2025 at 09:03:45

Many many thanks to Saint Daniel O’Neil for the loan of his seat for an unforgettable occasion. I haven’t had a more enjoyable and emotional day since my first ever visit to Goodison as a kid.

Danny, you’re going to love your seat and I’m forever in your debt!

I was looking forward to the day but the reality surpassed all expectations. The train into Sandhills was indeed packed but there were absolutely no issues alighting and clearing the station, apart from one little fat angry koppite barging through and muttering “youse are fcuking shit, fcuking bastards, grrrr” but he was obviously retarded and no-one took him on.

Had a good walk around the ground with my mate Paul who’s in the North stand. The steps at the river end give the best view of our majestic new home and brought out the first tears. Up past the multitude staring at the floor looking for their stones and back to the fan zone pushing through the bottle neck as there was a very large queue for the ticket office.

Time for a quick beer at the automated bar (tip - if you like, or can even just tolerate Stout, it’s worth joining the short queue for the stout dispenser as the lager queues were massive. If you prefer wine you’re even luckier as there was no queue at all for that!)

Paul joined the very long queue for gate 17 and I walked around to Danny’s gate, 12, happy to see it was relatively short and I was inside after max 5 minutes. The concourse was spacious and loud with away type singing around the bars. I was driving home 260 miles later so didn’t have another but the queues seemed manageable. There was loads of space (East Stand) for comfort, better than I’m used to at any away I can think of.

Went for a whizz and the guy next to me commented that it felt like an away game. I thought he meant because the toilets were so pleasant!

Inside with 15 minutes to go and quickly found Danny’s seat. Row ten, on line with the edge of the penalty box and a clear sight line to anywhere else in the stadium, let alone the pitch. No obstructed views in this ground!

The talk all around me was positivity. Grealish starts, with Ndiaye, Barry and Dewsbury Hall in as well. There was absolutely NO negativity towards Iroegbanum, Garner at full back, Keane in the middle. It is what it is and we couldn’t wait to get started.

The atmosphere built and the noise grew and grew until “There she goes” came on and was belted out with gusto from fifty thousand throats. It was electrifying and brought more tears from me. The absolute NOISE! I remember as a kid in the seventies wishing we had a roof to make some noise and now we have one! The “dj” went through the repertoire and the noise built to a crescendo as the teams came out. I looked at the Brighton support and they looked cowed to me. I’ve never known anything like it.

I’ll skip the game - everyone on here should’ve seen it. Not perfect but fittingly edge of the seat stuff at both ends and it’s fitting we won. We looked a proper team, despite the patched up formation and it bodes well for when we get a settled eleven. I think top half is achievable at the very least.

I left soon after the whistle and walked to my son’s house in Everton where I was parked. 35 minutes walk with a grin on my face.

An Absolutely perfect and memorable day. Thanks again Danny!

We’re home!

Great write up Mark, reiterating a lot of the same feelings that I encountered on this historical day.Even though I had experienced the stadium via the second test event,a true reflection and experience would be gained on a full capacity match day, and, wow, what a day to feel that buzz, hear that roar and blow away the dire disappointments of so many years.Hats off to Danny for his generous gesture.Top man. I gained my ticket via a successful ballot application and was determined to soak up all that the day would offer and it didn’t let me down, amazing stadium filled with the best supporters in the world, great atmosphere, customary pie and a pint and a view from the Upper North Stand that was breathtaking, football that had me up in the air at times and sitting on the edge of my seat at others but we ran out victorious and this great day gave us everything we needed to make it the start of our new era.Well done to everyone who made my day, thank you. Big shout out (literally, at 116 decibels apparently) also to Dan Meis - after our first proper game, he’s got the design and acoustics for Evertonians absolutely spot on. Both Highbury and the Boleyn Ground were similar to Goodison, but both Arsenal and West Ham fans really struggled to regain any discernible atmosphere in the Emirates or the London stadium - the seats are far too set back from the pitch and their whole setup feels soulless. The noise and atmosphere generated yesterday at HD is an architectural textbook example of how to do a clubs house move and keep the family happy. And loud. Can’t wait to get there.

Dennis Stevens 192 Posted 25/08/2025 at 10:15:15

Lovely report on your day out, Mark. I managed to make the pilgrimage for the 3rd test event &, once you accept we all have to "progress" to the ubiquitous bowl design, the stadium is a stunner.

Bernard Dooley 193 Posted 25/08/2025 at 10:17:30

A great game and a fine win, Albeit a bit of luck at times and a good time for Welbeck to miss a penalty. So many of our lads played well including one Tim Iroegbunam. See Annika Herbert and Neil Tyrell if you don't beleive me.So who do know Alls or no nothings write him off an hour before kick off based on the Leeds debacle?Gary Carter, Derek Knox, Mike Powell, to name but three.

Dave Abrahams 194 Posted 25/08/2025 at 10:26:17

Regarding going to the match,my son Tony picked me up at 12-30 pm and drove us to the new ground, he spoke my thoughts as we were passing Goodison saying “ It’s strange passing Goodison Park and we’re going to see Everton!

Yes I thought strange, sad and guilty passing my first love like that and when we got to the new ground she was young, very attractive and will be the envy of many but she will never give me the urge or inclination to lose my love for the old, lovely and beautiful Goodison Park.I’ll never give her up.

I like Brambly Moor so that’s a start and it’s still Everton I’m in love with!

Lee Courtliff 195 Posted 25/08/2025 at 10:34:36

Colin@161, people often criticise WhatsApp’s, because it provides a lot of disinformation (nowhere near as bad as some of the very biased legacy media, imo) so I had to check again.

I got it wrong, it was actually 133 years to the day, that Goodison park, was officially opened yesterday mate, but I’m not sure if Everton actually played on that date, all those years ago.

Being from Florida, Jamie, I’d say the best time to come to watch Everton playing at the Dock, would be either August or April/May. If you are hopefully on top of your family business mate, get saving, get planning and get praying, because if Everton can finally get a team, befitting of this beautiful stadium, (designed by a fellow American, no less) then you definitely need to come and see it for yourself💙.

Like I said to my daughter on the way out of the ground yesterday, there will be bad days, but that doesn’t matter, just as long as there are also some good days. It’s what defines us, after all!

Peter Mills 199 Posted 25/08/2025 at 12:06:43

Jamie #180, I’ve been on corporate hospitality a few times over the years, but I’ve always felt like I’ve been missing out on the true match-day experience.

Yesterday was rather different, as we were in a private dining room for 8 people, with glazed doors overlooking the pitch. Our seats were immediately outside the room, so we were able to step outside and take in whatever was happening on the pitch pre-match.

Our main course was slightly late being served, and we were taken aback to vaguely hear the strains of “Grand Old Team”. We shovelled our grub down our necks, and dashed out of the air-conditioned, sound-insulated lounge into a wall of heat and sound as the Z-Cars siren started. It was a fantastic moment.

I’ve had a few positive things to say about the stadium, and a few moans as well. I’ve got to say that everything about yesterday was top class.

We were even introduced to CEO Angus Kinnear. I briefly contemplated grasping him in a friendly headlock, but thought better of it.

Phil Roberts 200 Posted 25/08/2025 at 12:13:53

Peter, glad you got your food before the match. We were in Trinity Place (only way I could guarantee a ticket and kids, "do you want the experience now or the money when I die?") and had our pudding after the match, not even HT.

Whoever is organising the restaurant needs some advice.

But the seats were awesome. Loved the plate glass walls as we were on a first row.

Annika Herbert 201 Posted 25/08/2025 at 12:13:54

Ian @ 190, now we wait and see if he is the right man to take us forward. Once again, I sincerely hope he proves me wrong yet again.

But I will still criticise when it’s warranted.

Raymond Fox 202 Posted 25/08/2025 at 12:18:10

To repeat myself from earlier, just how many goals will Grealish create this season if please god he stays fit? I think loads is the answer.

Dibling hopefully and Ndiaye doing their stuff also will keep teams pushed back more. Our midfield did well with a special mention for Dewsbury-Hall and Gueye.

I can't really say the same for most of our defenders, though, with the exception of Keane, because the scoreline could have been very different if they had put their chances away. All good fortune gratefully received though, I think Brighton will again finish well up the division.

Brian @ 168, so you are a fellow pie eater, you've kept that quiet.I first became an Everton supporter in 1970 swaying about on the Gwladys St. End as a glory hunter when the League was won and have been one ever since through thick and mostly thin. Although I did had have divided loyalties when Wigan Athletic reached the Premier League and played Everton, very tricky that was.

Tony Abrahams 203 Posted 25/08/2025 at 12:20:35

Funny, Peter, and looking back at what was such a lovely “Everton day”. Sometimes, the result means everything but, for a purist like myself, quality has often got to be the number one objective, and yesterday was definitely one of those days.

It was strange and also a little bit sad driving past Goodison, Dave, but after experiencing our new home full with the furniture, I was actually smiling to myself when I drove past my old turnstile on Gwladys Street, when taking the short cut to get you home.

Another nice thing has been listening to people who went through town, both before and after yesterday's game. The Toffees are reclaiming big chunks of the city centre, and it's definitely not going to be sitting pretty with the other crowd!

Phil #200, they were having some teething problems. We got pud at half-time and cheese after the game, but we were glad for it to work out that way.

First world problems, I know.

I'm not going to complain about any player's performance yesterday but the praise being given to one player by many just surprises me.

I'll keep watching him; it must be me who is missing something!

Say what you mean, Dave.

Barry, Dave?

Dave # 194 - you can take the boy out of Goodison but you can't take Goodison out of the boy.

I watched the build-up and game. The stadium looked fantastic chockablock full of Evertonians. I have to say it – thank you, Farhad Moshiri.

I thought we deserved to win – we outfought Brighton.

I think Moyes is going to have lots of options in midfield going on their performance today. I speculated at the start of the window he would sign a tall central midfielder but it looks like he might not have to if Iroegbunam keeps improving. I thought he played really well yesterday.

If we can get Branthwaite and Mykolenko back fit, I think we will give any team a game.

Phil (206.) No. I'm not spoiling the day.

Les (207). No. definitely not Barry. I'm giving him a lot more time the same as I'm giving the player I didn't see play like a lot of fans thought he did, as I said it must be me. When I catch up to those who like him, I'll put my hands up and say so.

My guess would be Michael Keane?

Keane had a decent game but I think he really worries Dave, but my own view is that I'd like to get Beto out the door and find a better replacement.

We all see different things!

I too found it a little strange going to the match yesterday: Would we get parked okay? Would I be able to access the turnstile? and Would I like the view from my seat? I had got comfortable going to Goodison but our whole matchday routine was to change.

In the end it was all brilliant: parking, the short walk along the Dock Road and into the Stadium, where everything is so much bigger, I shall certainly need my distance glasses on Wednesday night. Also great to see the local neighbourhood springing into life, long may that continue. Roll on Wednesday.

In the end, it was a brilliant day and there is so much to discover at the Stadium.

Couple of thoughts for this week.

Right-back is a must.A central midfielder, Bissouma and get him motivated.Dibling. Our right side is woefully weak.Cheeky deal for Højlund at Man Utd and flog Beto to whoever will take him.

My guess for Dave’s puzzlement would be Tim Iroegbunam who, I’d bet, still isn’t busy enough / is too prone to ‘switching off’ to satisfy him.If I’ve got it right, I get it (to some extent). I thought he was overly criticised previously and may be getting over-praised now in the aftermath of a desperately wanted win. I think he’s still developing and so can get better and potentially emulate Gana in consistently influencing games. For all that I generally agree with what Dave posts, I do think he seems extremely hard to please when it comes to certain players.
