The Toffees have won just three games in the Women’s Super League this season. Sorensen’s sacking comes just three days after their first home win of the season against Aston Villa.

In a statement, Everton confirmed that the club have parted ways with Sorensen with immediate effect.

Coaches Stephen Neligan and Ashley Tootle have also departed their roles with the Toffees.

Explaining the decision, Everton CEO Angus Kinnear said: “We would like to thank Brian, Stephen and Ashley for their hard work and efforts in their time at the Club.

“Sunday’s first win of the season at Goodison Park was important, but it has become evident that a change of direction is necessary to ensure the progression on the pitch we are all striving for.”

Everton are locked in the WSL relegation battle with just four points separating the Toffees in ninth to Liverpool in 12th.

What has gone wrong for Sorensen at Everton?

Sorensen saw his side beat Liverpool 4-1 on the opening day of the season at Anfield. However, that result brought false promise, as the Toffees only won one of their next 12 games – against WSL champions Chelsea.

In that time, they also suffered nine defeats and two draws. Ian Wright said Everton should replace Brian Sorensen last week on an episode of the Crossways Podcast.

Everton, though, showed fight with their victory against Aston Villa. However, any renewed hope for Sorensen lasted just three days before he was sacked.

The Toffees have also had off-field problems with Kelly Gago pushing for a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Gago accused Everton of lacking professionalism after claiming she had come to a verbal agreement with Sorensen that she could leave the Toffees for a club outside the WSL.

Everton had no intention of selling Gago unless their £500,000 valuation was met.

Sorensen was appointed as Everton manager in 2022 and enjoyed his best season in 2022-23, where they finished sixth.

Since then, the Toffees have finished no higher than eighth in the standings.

What’s next for Everton?

Everton’s U18 coach Scott Phelan will take on the role as interim Everton manager for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

He will be assisted by Jennifer Foster and goalkeeping coach Ian McCaldon.

Phelen will hope to get off to a winning start when they face London City Lionesses on Sunday.
