World Cup qualifying is complete, confirming a 48-team finals in North America. Sunderland players are in contention.

Tuesday’s play-offs settled the last spots, Italy losing on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina after beating Northern Ireland in the semi-final. Sunderland Echo notes the Black Cats could be well represented.

Lutsharel Geertruida played 73 minutes in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Ecuador. His versatility suits tournaments, and it would be a surprise if Ronald Koeman left the 20-cap star out. Brian Brobbey led the line in that match and, despite one goal in 10 caps, has a strong chance.

Chemsdine Talbi logged only 13 qualifying minutes but has since won four caps, playing against Ecuador and Paraguay, and his Sunderland form keeps him in contention. Nilson Angulo missed through injury, yet he has 12 caps and featured in Ecuador’s last four qualifiers, including a 1-0 win over Argentina. If he is fit, the winger will be there.

Omar Alderete is a cornerstone for Los Guaraníes and will start if available. Wilson Isidor has switched to Haiti, won two caps this window and equalised in a 1-1 draw with Iceland. Habib Diarra, on four goals in 18 caps and in improving club form, will surely make Senegal’s squad.

Noah Sadiki played 73 minutes in the intercontinental play-off and is joined in DR Congo’s squad by Arthur Masuaku. Granit Xhaka played all but 14 minutes for Switzerland, scored twice and captained the side, and this could be his last World Cup.
