Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford says he “doesn’t know” what will happen next season amid uncertainty around his future.
Trafford joined City this summer for £31 million from Burnley. He came through the City academy before being sold to Burnley in 2023, spending two years at the club and making 73 appearances.
When he moved back to City it seemed he was ready to be the number one keeper, and he started the first three league games of the season.
Then Pep Guardiola decided to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma on deadline day, and Trafford has not started a league game since.
On playing back-up to the Italian, Trafford said: “I didn’t expect the situation to happen, but it happened, so I just get on with it. Work very hard every day and then see what happens, give it my best shot.
“It is what it is. It’s football, it is what it is, you’ve got to keep grafting every day and the games that come, play as hard as you can. It’s just another experience to add to my career and yeah, it has been good learning.
“I don’t know what happens next season. I just know that I’ll just take it a day at a time and try and improve.”
Trafford has seen his starts limited to the domestic cup competitions, and one start in the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen.
Trafford was asked if he thought his place in the England squad was at risk with his lack of game time this season, and said: “I haven’t spoken to them (England) about if that’s enough, but I play as well as I can and train every day very hard and it’s just down to me.
“Obviously everyone knows what’s going on with me, so I’ve just got to, whenever I play, play as well as I can.”
