Manchester City talent Oscar Bobb has opened up on his Etihad Stadium future amid doubts in some quarters over his immediate prospects in the game.
Bobb suffered a frustrating 2024-25 season derailed with recurring injuries that prevented the 21-year-old from kicking on from an impressive 2023-24 season when he broke into Pep Guardiola’s first-team with a series of impressive displays.
The Norway international burst onto the scene in Newcastle after latching onto a pinpoint Kevin De Bruyne lofted through ball to score a last-minute winner and give Manchester City a monumental three points en route to their fourth straight Premier League title.
After impressing in pre-season last summer, Bobb was also the shining light of Manchester City’s FA Community Shield victory over Manchester United in August 2024 but suffered a leg break in training in the days following the title win.
En route to full fitness earlier this year following a lengthy lay-off, the forward suffered a minor setback as he injured his ankle, which kept out of action in subsequent months for him to only make his long-awaited return to action in April – in a 2-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League.
Guardiola did give Bobb the chance to get some substitute minutes under his belt in the closing games of the season but the Manchester City manager admitted so himself that he has been very cautious with playing the academy graduate amidst Bobb’s injury troubles.
The upcoming FIFA Club World Cup campaign will give Bobb a much-needed platform to win back Guardiola’s trust and get regular first-team minutes in the locker as Manchester City plan to challenge on all fronts next season after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign.
James McAtee is expected to complete a permanent move away from the Etihad Stadium this summer in search of regular first-team football but Bobb remains highly-rated by Guardiola and just needs to prove his fitness to win back his manager’s trust.
Speaking while away on international duty with Norway, Oscar Bobb has insisted that he is determined to remain at Manchester City into next season despite seeing little playing time during the last campaign.
“Everyone wants to play every week,” the Norway international told Nettavisen.
Pressed on how he goes about weighing up staying at Manchester City against going on loan to secure regular game time, Bobb added: “I wouldn’t have said I wanted to stay at City if I didn’t think it was possible. That’s the plan.”
Manchester City officials will also be hoping that the pair of Phil Foden and Rico Lewis can return to their best as a collective drop-off from the first-team squad saw the club’s highly-capable academy graduates come under severe criticism over their lacklustre performances at various points of the season.
