UEFA have announced that Stéphanie Frappart will take charge of the Euro 2025 final between England and Spain – and there’s no one better for the job.
The 41-year-old Frenchwoman has become one the foremost figures in the world of refereeing, but it’s been a long road to the top.
She started her refereeing career at the age of 13, and by 28, Frappart was taking charge of matches in the third tier of French football.
Shortly afterwards, in 2014, she refereed in Ligue 2 and the next year she was selected to officiate at the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Things would only get bigger and better from then on.
At the next Women’s World Cup in 2019, Frappart refereed the final between the USA and the Netherlands. The following season, she became the first female to take charge of a match in Ligue 1.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, she’d then referee the UEFA Supercup final between Liverpool and Chelsea, making her the first woman to officiate in a major men’s European final.
She’s since refereed in the men’s Champions League and the Coupe de France final, and in the women’s game, she returned to the World Cup in 2023.
Frappart’s significance to the game extends beyond herself and beyond genders. While the waves she’s made in the men’s game have been enormous in opening doors for more women, this final, the conclusion of Euro 2025 between England and Spain, may well be the highlight of her refereeing career.
She’ll be joined by compatriot Willy Delajod as video assistant referee, along with German Christian Dingert. Her assistant referees will be Camille Soriano, also of France, along with Italians Francesca di Monte and Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi.
The final will kick off at St. Jakob-Park in Basel at 17:00 GMT on Sunday 27th July.
